xbox360 controller for pc-- not working

I just bought Shift 2 Unleashed for PC. In order to get started playing it, I also bought the XBox 360 wireless controller (it also has a cord that can plug into USB). I plugged it in to my usb port and the computer recognized it and loaded the drivers right away. But when I look in control panel at the gaming controls. it does not show up. But it does show up under Device manager. When I start the game, it acts like there is no controller attached even though it is one of the options for a controller in the options menu of the game.

I am running Vista x 64 bit, 6Gb of ram. Any ideas?

The USB cable is only for charging the controller. It doesn't act as a data cable. You still have to connect the controller wirelessly to your PC using the USB receiver that you have to buy separately.

Thanks for the info. That makes sense. I don't think it mentions that in the manual that comes with the controller. But it figures. Appreciate the fast response.
