XMS, hyperX, etc. usage

As far as I have found in my many, many hours of researching, the only real difference between value memory and more expensive memory is that more expensive memory can be overclocked.

(budget system!) I'm looking at 1gb of corsair value select, or this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145486 (xms cas3 2x1gb pc3200) the 2 gigs of xms is ends up as $135, while 2 gigs of value select is $160.

The system will probably be one of those sets of ram on a 3200+ and 6800xt. I'll be doing basic internet surfing and all the home stuff, along with playing WoW on as high settings as possible. Unless the 1 vs 2 gbs will make significant noticable improvements, I'd like to stay cheap. So, with that, what do you recommend?

If thats all your doing, 2 gig is no need. You wont see a difference. Unless by highest settings on WoW you mean like the highest res possible. WoW doesnt demand that much for graphics, my step-dad has a 9800 XT that plays it max just fine with 8x AF and 2x AA at 1024x768 and he has 1 gig dual channel. So you dont really have to pay the extra for another gig, its not needed.

Basically, another gig wont make a difference. And usually if you add to much memory it will slow your computer down.

Unless of course you want to play BF2! That's such a ram intensive game!

Just remember that 2 gigs will be plenty for now and future games, but if you really don't play games often, then perhaps you should listen to Otacon.

lol well, i have a gig in mine and it plays all my games just fine. And really, where you will notice the performance most for gaming with ram is loading times with maps and levels. Really the demands are from the graphics card, the more graphics memory you have the better, like 256 and 512 cards are needed to really max out todays games.

Well, yea i guess MMORPG games would be ram heavy, but i dont think you would need over a gig really. You could get it, as it pry would increase the performance in loading times, but your fps would mostly remain the same.

I can play Guild Wars: Faction which is more graphic intensive then WoW maxed out 16xAF no AA 1024x768 with 1 gig of memory and i dont get any cutting/fps drops at all. So you should be fine with a gig.
