I have Windows XP 32 Bit and would like Windows 7 64 Bit can i buy Windows 7 upgrade and start it from disk and wipe my hardrive clean would it work then? I am buying a new processor thats 64 bit Supported to.

No you cannot upgrade directly from Windows XP to Windows 7 if that's what you're asking.
Yes, will have to buy the Windows 7 64bit install disk and format your HDD, then install Windows 7.

Long story short. You can't upgrade any 32 bit OS to 64 bit or visa versa. You'll have to do a fresh install.

What do you mean by fresh install, i don't care if i lose my files.

By "fresh install", I mean formatting the HDD completely (Or 'wiping the HDD clean...'), not doing an Upgrade.

And upgrade, really only upgrades your OS, and saves your old Windows documents/files and what not.

Ok i see but do i have to have the Windows 7 Full Version or can i use the Upgrade Version after u do the format? to make it 32 bit to 64 bit.

Upgrade and the Full Version is the same. It's just the cd key that makes everything different.

Apparently, you can install a full version through the upgrade version if you know the vista trick.

You can do a fresh install using the Upgrade disc. You just need to boot from the disc, instead of just throwing the disc in while your current version of Windows is running.

Boot from the upgrade disc, select Custom Install, choose Advanced Options, format your current C: drive, install. Windows 7 will back up all your data into a folder called WINDOWS.OLD where you can sort through and find all your pictures and documents.

This is incorrect as the "Vista trick" doesn't work with Windows 7.

You need to have an activated copy of Windows already installed.

Have dead system with VALID / Activated XP key.
Can I build a new computer, run "Windows 7 UPGRADE" disk on new build and install Windows 7 ?? ..... It would appear you MUST have XP installed on drive for this to work.
So what about this ...
I have an "Image backup" of above old drive.
Could I RESTORE image onto "New Build HDD", then boot new computer with Windows 7 Upgrade disk and proceed to "Clean Install" Windows 7 (will also move to 64bit, my XP was 32bit). When it asks for Key, I will provide my Valid/ Activated XP key, think that will work?? Also concerned about "machine configuration" changing ... Think MS would have a problem with that??

Yes, but you need the proper code for full version.

Also - you're still stuck with 32 to 32 for upgrade or 64 bit to 64bit

To end all confusion with what everyone else is saying - yes you can.
