I have two hard drives in my computer right now, one with xp and the other with ubuntu. I'm trying to get it so the xp hard drive is the master and the ubuntu is the slave. I got it so when i turn on the computer i can pick to boot with xp but i can't figure out how to get it so i can pick ubuntu. I played with the boot.ini file in xp and got it to say ubuntu on the boot screen but i can't get it to boot into ubuntu. So i'm wondering how i do add the location of ubuntu into the boot.ini file?

Boot the LiveCD and follow this guide;

You don't use Windows to boot Ubuntu, you use GRUB to boot both Ubuntu and Windows.

I can boot both of them fine i just need to have the ubuntu hard drive as the main one but i want to be able to use the xp hard drive as the main one. I can't get ubuntu to show on the list when i boot from xp, this is when the xp hard drive is the main one.

That's because they are on different hard drives. You should to set up one hard drive with both operating systems on it in a dual boot configuration. Or, you can unplug the drive you don't want to use from the mainboard each time you boot. I think the dual boot would be more convenient.

a hard drive switch would solve your problem nicely. There would be the added advantage of having only one HD using power at a time. Switch controls up to 4 hd's and fits into a spare 3 1/2 inch slot along with your dvd burner.
