XP being weird

Hello,

I have a very cheap quite old desktop that I use for almost solely for watching TV. Up until last week it used to turn on normally but now everytime I turn it on I asks me to enter set up then exit setup just to get it to boot up. Then I start the HDI player I use to watch the tv and it prompts a update download which it then tells me is already installed. In addition to all that the clock always begins from midnight jan 2006.

Does anyone know how to clear this?
 
I would suggest a system restore to the point where this problem was not occuring and see how that goes. Post back and tell us if it was successful or not.
 
If your system is that old and if the date is resetting back to 2006 then its time to replace the cmos battery on the motherboard. They are usually cr2032 but take the battery out and take it with you when you get a replacement which you can get anywhere that carries batteries like walmart, walgreens even the local home depot or menards. Even some grocery stores carry the specialty batteries.
 
Ive restored the system to a date when it was functioning normally and replaced the battery - the problem persists.

I forgot to mention that at the point it asks me to press F1 to enter setup it also says CMOS Checksum Bad. CMOS Time and date not set.

Does that narrow it down?
 
It will do that when you replace the battery. It may need a bios update. Go into the bios and load system defaults and set date and time.
 
Sorted now, thanks for the advice.

The only trouble ive got now is when I go to launch the TV player I get it prompting and update. If I accept the update it then tells me that the update has already been completed and is therefore not required. It does this every time I use it. How can I stop it?
 
I though they should last longer too but this computer was sitting unused in an uninsulated, drafty, and cold garden shed for about three years. I am the first to admit that I know very little about computers but I do know what treatment like that will do to a car battery so i assume the same will result from a watch battery too.
