I have a disc that came with my dell desktop. Its a windows reinstallation disc. Does anyone know if it will work to put xp on my desktop? its custom built if that means anything.
I really need to go back to xp! I was talking to a guy who was going to make me a bootable disc but he isn't replying to any of my messages now.

if you have vista right now and you are unable to install xp, then you have to fix a xp custom built disc! it is a normal windows xp but some stuff has been added to it (services packs, hot fixes, driver packs). Me my self have made a xp like this, I removed everything i didnt need(Help and supports, moviemaker) and added some other stuff (latest updates from microsfot, some themes). It is illegal to do this, I think so!

so search on google: "xp driverpack iso"

No. The disc will look for a Dell signature (either BIOS or the actual MoBo itself) when you try to install it. If it doesn't see the Dell 'flag' so-to-speak, it will not proceed with the installation.

Not necessarily. I have a Windows XP disc that came with the Dell Dimension 8200 that I purchased Sep 02 and it has worked on every computer I've tried it on, Custom, HP, Compaq and with any XP Home License.

It adds a stupid dell icon on the start menu, but it runs and updates fine on any computer. I have used this probably 20 times on different computers.

Hmmm. My fault for assuming it was a Dell Restore Disc and not a general XP Install CD. If that was the case, then yes, no barriers...aside from the legal terms of the EULA of course. A Dell Restore CD, however, is tied to Dell systems.
