you can make shortcuts on your desktop for any installed programs by going under "start", "programs", right click on the program you want to make a shortcut for and select "send to" "desktop (create shortcut)".

why don't you just create profiles for each of the kids and let them each dress up there own desktop.

Follow "thebigdintx" advice from the kids desktop/profile
if the program doesnt show up for creating a shortcut then it may be installed under admin rights (which should be "you" under your profile name)
or for sole user only ( again you)
If thats the case it may be worth making a new folder in the shared documents folder, call it what you want, then drag and drop the shortcuts from your desktop into the folder,
then when using there profle/desktop access the shared folder drag and drop the shortcuts onto there desktop, see how you go
if no luck then only chance would be to re-install and select
"for all users" if allowed
