xp installation problem

im trying to install xp home. my old computer, which had 2 partitions. In the first installation I had deleted the larger partition and formated it. The installation didn't work and the formatting deleted files necessary to booting Windows. I then tried to install XP into the c: drive (smaller partition) and there was not enough memory to run the installation on that drive. I am now stuck.

There is no way I know to format the c: drive. My question is:

Do you think if i was even able to somehow format the c: drive, and merge the 2 partitions, that the installation would now work. If so, do you have any ideas of what I should do?

When you boot from the CD to install, along in the installation when you get to the formating option, you need to Delete both partiions, and then Make one, or how ever many you like new partions to format it again.
