xp installation question

SCENARIO:
I installed xp on a disk that did not have a product key. After doing so the copy on the hdd validated no problem.

QUESTIONS
How did that happen? Could it be because both brands of hdd where the same?
 
The validation has nothing to do with the hard drive. What type of installation disk did you use? OEM, upgarde, full install? Was this key activated on a different machine?
 
maybe someone could clarify, but i think its the components of the whole machine it checks during validation ? that way if your hard drive fails but you have the same machine your entitled to reinstall your windows os on your new hard drive in the same pc without having to buy another key.
 
only problem ive had in the past is video card or and motherboard. ive never seen anything else keep it from installing. called microsoft and gave a new key no problem.
