i was defraging my harddisk when suddenly my pc stopped responding.
i tried closing the defrag but that too was very slow.after some time the following message appeared

Winows cant restart as one of the files is missing

<WINDOwS ROOT>\system 32\hll.dll
please install the file again.

how do i do this????
can this be done without reinstalling xp as i have about 25 gb of data to be tranferred to and for in that case.

please help as early as possible.

Thanks

inset your window xp cd, and enter the recovery console. From here you can locate the hll.dll file on the xp cd and copy it over the missing or corrupt one.

where do i copy the file to

i tried what you mentioned but the setup of XP stops as it is unable to create Windows folder.after trying a few times it stopped once aftre being unable to create Windows\help.
why did it proceed to Windowds\help only once.
is there any alt way???
what should be the bios settings for booting from the HD as was done normally???

i had to reinstall xp and i lost my complete data

Anyway,
i tried formatting my C: drive before reinstalling XP but while formatting i got the message:"Format failed".someone told me that my HD has bad sectors which can not be repaired and that i should get a new HD.now i have XP installed in D: drive(i have c,d,e drives).c: drive is almost empty except for one program.
can i format the drive through xp to repair the bad sectors if possibel, how?
if i simply transfer the program from c to e before formatting and back again will it work.the reason i am asking this is because the program needs a license to run and every time it needs one i have to pay for it.

thanks
