XP/Office 97 install issue

I recently installed XP Pro version 2002 with SP2 on my system (previously WinMe). I attempted to re-install my copy of office 97 (that worked fine with Me) to the new load, and ran into some problems. The install claimed to be a success, and all of the products including excell, access, outlook, and publisher all worked wonderful. When I click to open Microsoft word it show the following error, "This application must be installed to run. Please run Setup from the location where you originally installed the application". It is driving me nuts! I removed, reinstalled, ran setup from the start menu, etc, and I give up! Can any one gie ame some help. I can't find any info related directy to my issue. Thank you for all your help.
 
No, I tried that. It doesn't make any difference. Besides, all the MOffice packages are installed in one install and everything except Word is working fine.
 
I re-imaged my drive to a date before MS Office was ever on the system and tried the install again. Same issue occurs.
