I was wanting to install xp or ubuntu on a newly acquired thinkpad 240. the only problem is that it is currently running windows 98 and usb doesnt seem to be working properly ( I can plug my external hard drive in and nothing happens but when I unplug it a message about un safe removal comes up). The only way that I can install a new os is via external hdd because the 240 has no cd drive.

Can anyone help or know how to get usb working?

Cheers Jim

It's probably just some driver/other problem(s) with Win98 itself, rather than a hardware problem. I would just plug the HD in and install, just make sure that you have set USB devices as primary boot device in BIOS.

Personally I'd install ubuntu. I installed it on a older gateway laptop of a buddies, and it runs awesome. Just make sure you have min. 256MB RAM. Xubuntu might run better if your RAM is 128-256MB range.
