I might have already made a thread or two on this:rolleyes:....sorry, i think ill be ordering in about a week so opinions please
Ok for the system i have in sig, im a gamer and im thinking performance wise, drivers, ect....what would you do? if i do get vista im going to get 64bit home premium...as of now im leaning toward XP unless you can push me over to vista

I was going to post a similar thread, but will just put in a word here and see if you all can help me decide as well.

Here is my setup:

MSI P6N Diamond LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI Motherboard
2.4 Core 2 Duo
2 Gig Platinum ram from OCZ
400 gig hard drive (don't need more then that )
LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner
GeForce 8600GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI ExpressVideo Card

Here is my question:

My kind of work demands a fast computer (hence the upgrade from a 3 Ghz Pentium 4 w/HT). I was going to go to windows XP to conserve resources, but now I'm wondering if I have a fast enough computer to handle vista and all the programs I run each day.

One a typical day I have a trading screen, two web browsers, IMs, yahoo widgets, and Microsoft outlook running on three monitors

Even though many claim Vista is not a good OS, I believe Vista will be required to game anyway. Ever Notice most of those "games for windows" require vista? The future is Vista whether you like it or not.

Thats what im thinking, i would hate to spend $120 on Windows XP and then spend another $100+ for a vista upgrade....

Buy xp now and use it for a good year or two, then once a service pack is out for vista and it has more games (it only has like one, halo2) get vista. Perhaps vienna will be announced by then and game creators will wait for it and not bother with vista and you wont need to get it at all.

:)

I will probably wind up getting XP, im afraid that after i get xp in a year or so most games are going to require vista or DX10... you gotta have vista for DX10, right?

yea thats what I would do to

If you need to buy an OS, buy Vista x64. A few games are designed only to run on Vista, and in the not too distant future you will need/want 4GB+ of RAM, which you can only use on a 64 bit OS.

That was the case with XP and XP x64, not so with Vista. If they have drivers for Vista, they will have them for both versions.

I've had no problems getting drivers for all my components for Vista x64.

ok i think i just go ahead and go with vista, omega with your system was there a major performance decrease with vista from xp? or did you have xp on that system at one time?

I have used XP 32bit, XP 64bit, and Vista x86 (32bit). I don't know how far your experience extends into 64bit OS's, but I personally hate them as far as most applications are concerned. It is nearly impossible to find drivers. Vista in general will not, in my experience, instal ANY unsigned drivers. While XP is still probably a better and more stable OS and I much prefer it to Vista, Vista supports DirectX 10. Trust me, upgrading to DirectX 10 makes a big difference if you're really into gaming. Anyway, thats just something to consider. Just be careful with the 64bit OS's, though. Make sure you really know what you're getting into. Good Luck.

of course xp will run faster than vista. but will it make a difference or is it enough for you to care? i dont think so. vista has most driver issues smoothed out by now, and the only reason i see as of now to keep xp is for software compatibilities (i have TWO programs that most people arent likely to have anyways that wont run on vista. so i dualboot when i need to use them).

Vista x64

I never installed XP on my current PC, but on my previous ones i've used both and I can say that there isnt that big of a difference, games run almost as well as they do on XP, and I dont even use all of my 2GB of available RAM.
