XP or Vista what's the real deal?

I've searched high and low for a solid answer, but to no avail I have come here to ask the computer (geeks) haha just kidding, the computer community what is the real deal between the 2 OS? My dad just bought a new computer from DELL and he had to settle for a inspiron because it was one of the only computers that you could still get XP on, any other computer was pushing Vista. I've heard nothing but bad things about Vista and that people were reverting back to XP. Why would they? Because so many things aren't compatible with Vista? Enlighten me please!:D I saw it on my friends computer and thought it looked sweet, but I didn't interact or anything with it.

From what I've read the majority who are returning to XP are those having stability issues with Vista i.e. BSODs. I think everyone is hoping the issues will be fixed in SP1.

Well, most of the people that you hear about on the internet just say they hate Vista because everyone else does. Most people never even have tried it, but they hate on it any chance they get.

However, Vista does have it's own set of problems. Aside from stability, Vista uses far more RAM (Memory), requires a much faster processor, and needs a high horsepower graphics card to work properly. Sure, you can run it on its minimum requirements, but if you plan on actually using your computer, with Vista, you're going to have to shell out money for a decent computer.

Most people who buy computers with Vista preloaded on them and have problems are probably not smart enough to try a few workarounds before giving up and reverting back to XP. First off, if you remove the "crapware" that comes on computers, Vista will ALOT smoother. Second, if things like programs and drivers don't seem to work, Vista includes a "compatability mode".

Vista isn't that bad, it's just some people have no patience.:)

Here's a list I've come up with for Windows Vista 64-bit. If you want Vista your computer hardware should be at least the following:

Intel Core 2 Processor
Pentium Processor Extreme
Pentium Dual-Core Processor
Pentium D Processor
Intel Celeron D Processor
Pentium 4 Processor 2.26 GHz and faster

AMD Phenom
AMD Athlon X 2 Dual-Core
AMD Turion 64 X 2 Dual-Core
AMD Athlon FX
AMD Athlon 3200+ or higher
AMD Turion 64 2.2 GHz and faster
AMD Sempron LE-1200 or higher
AMD Sempron 3800+

1.5 gigabytes of random access memory

At least a 40 gigabyte hard drive or larger. Windows Vista 64-bit requires 15 gigabytes of free hard drive space.

^ This guy knows what he's talking about..;)

I am afraid I have never had a BSOD with Vista... Vista is having some problems because of Dell's crappy drivers, too. I noticed this with my laptop... I am also yet to see an actual screenshot of a Vista BSOD..

I couldn't agree more. Vista is in the same categories as Ford, and George Bush. Everyone loves to hate it, but most don't even know what they're talking about.

Vista is fine, and I actually prefer it to XP. It's never given me any problems at all (after you get the User Account Control turned off)

Vista is having some problems because of Dell's crappy drivers,

I was waiting for someone to lay the hate down on Dell, too. Surprised at how quickly it happened, though.

Lemmings, I say.

Too bad you guys couldn't produce any useful knowledge... You know I was actually trying to get along with the Vista haters(yes, you've been labeled) but, you've elevated the hostility, again...

Btw, have you tried Dell's drivers for their WLAN cards or their 8600M GT drivers? (Didn't think so)

A lot of ppl bash Vista, but they always find excuses about stability. A lot have just made assumtions mostly from the Beta version. I personally use both Vista Ultimate (when I'm at home) and Home Premium (Its on my laptop which I keep with me at uni which is away from home) and I find it great.

wow, another vista thread as much as i would like to state why i downgraded my thinkpad to xp i won't do it. probably this will cause Forum (gang) wars :P

I didn't elevate anything. I simply knew after reading half the first post what the Thread was going to turn into and wondered How long it would take for someone with a Dell comment to show up.

As far as producing useful knowledge, why bother in a Thread like this? Do a search for 'XP VIsta' and find the dozens of similar-Topics. I personally loved the Popcorn and Horse pics that were posted, because, hell they just fit.

You would be correct in your assumptions. However, since it's no secret that I neither:

A) enjoy working on wireless and often refuse service calls to do so, and
B) I have zero desire to have a graphics card of that nature and none of my Clients use their systems for gaming...

...I fail to see your victory in that statement.

XP or Vista? Cookies or brownies? Star Trek or Star Wars? Pooh or Tigger? Elmo or Big Bird? Quake or Doom? Jeff Gordon or Dale Jr.? Peppermint or Spearmint? See how stupid this is?

In closing, label me whatever the hell you want ;)

That's part of the problem, when they do go to search through the threads, they see XP, XP, XP.... And they trust that because ppl put the words Vista, BSOD, Compatibility, Driver error, slow, and unresponsive in a sentence. One of which I have seen but, they believe that and every other forum/blog that doesn't like Vista.

You might be a smart person for that...

Had I not got aggravated with Fedora 8 you wouldn't have seen that comment because I would've kept Linux instead of Vista. But, it takes 20 different operations to install a picky Nvidia driver, and I really didn't know what I was doing...

Well I have some thoughts about Vista and some negative experience using it.
Of course it looks nice and surely it is next big step of Microsoft Co to improve its OS.
My relatives have Windows Vista on their Samsung R20 notebooks. This notes have rather good characteristics but still Vista runs rather hard and slow on them. So the first disadvantage of Vista - it is too resource intensive. My dad had some problems with software installing on Vista. For example he couldn't run Rumors (soft for Forex) without expert support. Second disadvantage of Vista - it is not adopted to all software. For my opinion this 2 disadvantages are main and evident.
I think we all will use Windows in some time just like we started using XP some years ago. They need time to improve it. At the beginning XP wasn't perfect as well as we all remember. Also we need to improve and renew our machines to run Vista.
My recommendation is to be with XP still for some time.

yeah but i've read professional reviews (more of them) that say vista is no good. i have seen few professional reviews saying vista is all that great, so i don't really care if you and your mom are running vista and it's working fine. there might be plenty of things you didn't know that vista is screwing up that a professional can notice. so for me, reading a positive or negative review from an average joe blow, i couldn't care if he used the product or not, it's kind of worthless info to me.

Vista is just XP with make-up on....

She looks pretty...but it's the same old bitch underneath.....

Vista 64bits can support more that 3.5 gigs of RAM
Vista supports DirectX 10 video cards.

besides that, there isnt too much that vista has over Xp. These benefits only really apply to gamers like myself
