I’m stuck in between the 2 right now. I do most of my video editing on vista but once I’m done I switch back to XP for everything else.
I only have vista on my desktop because of the 64 bit.
I dual boot both along with the ubuntu 7.10 distro of Linux at the present time. The only reason XP is still on for video capturing/editing since I still haven't found the Vista equivalent on the software needed I would use. Plus some other games as well as softwares were written primariliy for XP.
will not let me edit...
There are too many different versions of vista. Make sure you sit down and read about the differences in all of them before you decide witch on if you go that rout.
Too many editions? Not really! XP saw Home, Pro, MCE, and the 64bit Pro(first 64bit Windows) editions there while Vista sees Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise(corporate edition). Basic is the essentials only while Business is more for the small or home business environment.
Home Premium and Ultimate are the more widely used on home pcs with Ultimate offering networking support. To see the comparison between editions,

If you got more than 2GB of RAM just get a Vista. Xp is outdated. it's a fact. You are gonna change to Vista sooner or later why not now.
The one main thing about XP is that it's been the main version for twice as long as any previous version due to the lengthy delays seen with Vista. Once you run Vista as the default version for a good lengthy period of time and then run XP it feels like someone running XP suddenly going back to 98/NT!
Despite some things not preferred about the new version there are some long needed improvements. One is seen easily when a game or app locks everything up Vista displays far better crash control. In XP when a game locks solid you hit the reset button for the hard boot.
With Vista you hit the ctrl-alt-del keys and have the option of opening the task manager to close something up and return to the desktop or simply shutdown. As for using more memory I would expect to see with any updated version of Windows since when XP was first seen 512mb to 768mb was the big numbers as far as ram was concerned on desktops. Now that you see boards with 8gb and 16gb max capacities who worries about 512 over XP's 128mb?
