xp or vista?

I'm building a new computer soon and I don't know if I should buy XP, or Vista.

I found an OEM XP Pro for $84, and if I want to jump on Vista later It'll be an extra 250. Just under the $400 that Vista costs...
But what about OEM Vista at half the price?

I've never used XP legally so I don't know how the license affects those who change peices of hardware and maybe even mobos, but I have heard some bad stories...

Should I just get OEM Vista or will I end up ****ed out of an OS If I want to switch mobos?

Personally I dont like Vista, as it takes up much system speed to run it. And Xp with a nice theme can look just the same. Also its a lot cheaper.

Budget wise I say go Xp. But if your willing to sacrifice some speed for the new look an features then go for it. Also obviously having the latest OS is going to be helpful as more support will be offered and you wont have to upgrade as quickly.

But I still prefer Xp, as it suites my needs and i find that its faster.

I would go with Vista rather than XP at the moment, but you'll run into some compatibility problems with some older applications and games.

vista. its piffariffic. (piffariffic is a good thing, btw).

i saw just spring the 180 now for vista and save your self some worry. youve never used xp legally then if you ge it now you might not get the legal vista in the future.

They both have pros and cons. Vista actually doesnt take up too much resources on my laptop, and actually the longer it's running, the less it takes up. Games and benchmarks run pretty much the same, but Vista is starting to become the norm so driver and program updates are going to be released for Vista more quickly then they will be with XP.

A lot of people say you'll run into compatibility issues with Vista. But they'll never get fixed if you don't have Vista, and report them yourself ;) Just trying to make a point.

If you have the money. I would go with Vista. And actually, if you wanted to, you can duel boot XP and Vista if you know what you're doing.

I heard something about how windows vista will say that it's on a new computer if you change your motherboard, and then you'll have to reactivate, is this true?

I don't know about vista, but XP will do that. I have to call MS everytime I install my copy of XP now so that I can get them to validate my install.

Exactly! Within the first 8 hours of installing vista ultimate 64bit, i ran into numerous problems, ranging from memory BSOD to program incompatability and vista didnh't know what to do about it, so i used the send error report. Within 24 hours, every single one of my problems had an answer. Turns out the memory was corrupt, and the programs had patches/updates to make them vista compatable

Yes, it will. I'm not sure about Vista, but with XP you would have to format the hard drive once you put new hardware in. Or else the computer won't boot because the OS won't recognize the hardware. And if you install Vista again, you have to get a new activation code from Microsoft.

I would go with Vista. I have the 32 bit home premium oem version and it is running great now with the computer in my sig. Although I had a few problems with it i have now figured it out and it is running great.

I'm thinking about just buying windows 2000 oem, and then after a while buying the windows vista upgrade.

can I upgrade from oem? is microsoft even still supporting windows 2000? and would windows 2000 oem allow me to change hardware devices?

Why would you do that? You can buy the OEM version of Windows Vista Ultimate for under $200 new.

I'm not sure I wanna go Vista, I might wanna switch to linux, and I don't wanna have to buy a second oem vista because I changed mobos

If you want to run linux just dualboot with vista. You should not have to buy a second OEM version of vista all you have to do is call microsoft up and get a new code and it should work. I would reccomend getting vista I really like it so far.

I recommend you get Vista. Even though I am not a big fan of it. I still recommend getting it because thats where all the support is going to be and alot of stuff is going to be made for Vista.

So in the long run it will outlast any other OS you can get. Sacrifice a little bit more money now and have piece of mind in the future

I've got 2 weeks until the intel price drop and I buy my new proccessor, which will complete my new system.

Well, I might just buy a legitimate version of XP Pro and just skip vista and wait till the next version of windows to get that, unless if Vista is really that great. I haven't heard about anything that really sounds appealing beyond cosmetics.

Windows 2000 is still supported by just about everything isn't it? I don't think Windows XP is gonna automatically not be considered anymore just because a newer windows is out...

Correct me if I'm wrong (it happens once or twice a year)

I think I'm just gonna wait a while and see what developes (maybe a price drop?)

Yeah well I just recently bought a new computer and had the option of getting Vista but I decided noy to cos it uses up more memory and cpu speed. But I usually recommend it for others because its easier having the latest OS.
