XP question and 8.04 Problem

the xp question is:can i password protect a folder?

the 8.04 problem is:when i boot from the dvd, the resolution is automatically set to something like 400by300 pixels, so when i open the install screen, the desktop is to samll to hold the whole window, so i can't click the next or begin buttons. nad in change screen resolution, 400by300 is the highest it has and even if there was a higher one, the window is so big that i can't click the apply button. any ideas?
 
Sounds like either Ubuntu doesn't like your GPU, or it was a bad image burn to the disc, both of which are equally possible. What program did you use to burn the image and at what speed was it burned. General rule of thumb is to burn at the slowest possible speed for your drive (mine's 8x) as opposed to 52x or the like; less chance of errors. I'd try a re-burn first and see if that clears it up. Otherwise, we'd have to look for others with similar problems with that MoBo/graphics setup.

www.ubuntuforums.com is an *excellent* source of info with a massive on-line community. If the re-burn doesn't work, I'd also post up over there in either the General Help or possibly the Installation/Upgrade folders.
 
I burned it at full 16x speed, but i bet it's probably my GPU. I'll try reburning, but my gpu just crashed 3 times when trying a xp 3d cube(deskspace/yodm).

anything about a password-protected folder?
 
K/Ubuntu might be a bit much for stock MoBo graphics depending on the specs of the Board. Have you tried Xubuntu? It's much more lightweight and you might have better luck with it.

As far as the folders, I know there are some free third-party programs out there that will do it, but I'm fairly certain you can't natively do it via Windows, at least not via GUI or playing with the Registry. Honestly though, I've never had to really look for how to do it. Whenever I run into a situation where I need certain folders blocked for whatever reason, I'll just make them Hidden and tell my Clients not to play with the system or go looking for certain things, else bad mojo will happen. I'm pretty much the computer voice of god to them, so they listen. If you want to keep certain things from others that use your system or as an added level of security, I'd probably just do a Google search and see what hits you get.
