XP & safe mode wont load

Hi guys,
When I switch on the PC it gets past the post and gets to the XP Pro (SP2) splash screen then restarts.

When I try safe mode it restarts after loading the drivers.

Before this started happening I had a virus which AVG healed then asked me to restart, its been the above ever since.

Im not sure what to do, I dont want to reformat, as Id lose everything on the PC!

Can anyone give me some tips?

Ive tried booting from the XP Installation disc, but it just bypasses the boot changes I made in the BIOS and tried to boot from the HDD.

Ive just downloaded the receovery console (is the the setup disc, or are you talking about the 6 floppies?) and Im going to burn that.

But, Ive never used the recovery console before.
