XP Startup freeze

Hi.

Problem with getting to Windows XP Media Center Edition.
Basically the startup before welcome screen is really slow. It seems that HDD is not doing anything, CPU is not making any noise, so the whole PC is just on halt (for up to 3 minutes). And then suddenly HDD kicks in and it takes another 30 seconds ant XP is up and running.

Any ideas what might cause this halt?

How large is your power supply? The extra 30 second drag seen on the AMD64 Atholon models is not surprising. The supply should be at least 400w on the newer AMD boards over the previously recommended 350w for the older Socket A models. The cpu itself doesn't make a sound unless it's cooking!

You are most like seeing the longer period due to using a SATA drive as the primary as well as the longer period of time seen posting with the AMD64 Atholon driven boards. An Asus board with an AMD64 3200+ actually takes about 30 seconds longer then the equivalent Socket A board with an Atholon XP3200+ model cpu. If you just upgraded from an older system this is what you would see. The extra 3 minutes on the other hand points at a possible bios related issue if your supply is stable.

Hi.
My PSU is 550W and it is quite new system. Actually, it hapens with my PC and also another PC I installed today, what is AMD Athlon64 CPU as well (with IDE HDD). But what parameters should I check on BIOS?

Three mnutes for bootup is excessive on any system. I know the Asus models boards I have worked with see a 30 second longer post then the Atholon XP3200+ Socket A board I'm using here. The supply has enough there to rule that out. You may want to try an update on the bios as well as monitor temps.

Another thing to do is a visual around the board for any bulged out or leaking capacitors. Hopefully you are not grounding to the chassis when the boards were mounted. That's another item to look over. You could pull the board and set it on a non conductive surface with only the video card and HD connected. You would have to extend the cable out with the supply lying loose to hook that up.
