Xp wont load

Pc fires up and won't get past the log in screen. It sat idle for a few months and worked fine for 20 mins then froze. Now it' stuck at the log in screen again. Any suggestions?? Thanks.

HDD could be failing. Seems like there are always issues after laying dormant for months at a time. What brand of drive is it? You could run a diagnostic on it.

As long as the system has a cd drive then you can download hirens boot cd iso, burn the image to a cd and then boot to the cd. The Western Digital utility is on that disk to run the diagnostic. Since it won't boot into windows, you can't run the WD windows utility. Have you tried booting in safe mode?
