xps 400 hard drive failure

I have an xps 400 and i was doing system restore when i got an error message and my computer shut down. now i can not boot up i tried to do repair windows with an xp cd and it says no hard drive detected. i dont know how to fix it

Your system is new enough that it shouldn't need SATA drivers to install windows so if the drive is connected and working it should show up in the windows installer.

Open up your case and make sure that no cables have come off on the inside. They shouldn't come off on their own but it's fast and easy to check.

It is possible it's dead but checking connections can be done without buying anything new. The drive is a little older, it's whatever Dell was using in the Pentium D days. So say ~4 years old max.
