you should uninstall all the codecs before getting videoLAN since you won't be needing them

Hi, thedoors27.
Try also to go here and download any Codec Pack (I use K-lite Codec Pack for example). When installing single codecs you never can be sure whether you have installed all codecs or not.

Sounds like you got cross-codec collisions (i.e., when users just go and install all the codecs they find and dont realize half of them are incompatible with the other half)

Using programs like AVICodec (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/avicodec.cfm ) or GSpot (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_tools/gspot.cfm ), you can determine specific codecs required for individual movies. For a general configuration which should allow you to play virtually any movie you come across, visit http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/48608

if its just the xvid movies you're having trouble with, then just download the free xvid player (version 6 is the newest, i think). this will play your movies with ease.
