Yet another odd pc problem.

A few days ago a friend of mine was getting some antivirus software and he found a company called "computer associates." When it came to the finish button where it askes you to restart is where this problem started. Once his pc shutdown and started loading windows xp, it loaded windows fine except for the start bar dissapered as if it was never there, no the start key on his keyboard did not work. ;) .

I thought it was just an explorer.exe error so Ictrl+alt+deleted and stopped and tried to start it but it would not load. About 5 minutes later out of nowhere the pc jus started shutting down.

When we turned it back on it would not post. I thought it was overheating so we left it for 20 minutes. After comming back it loaded windows except for the darn startbar. This time after about 3 minutes of the pc finishing loading windows it started shutting down.

But this timeit had a little window "You have (60) seconds left to shutdown" where the number in the parentheses was slowly counting down. There was some other text around this.

It said something about NT Authority/system had an error with the (RPC) remote procedure call. If we try and turn it on again without waiting 20 minutes from when it turns off it wont post.

On the luck of the draw some post error threw me into the bios. The temps where perfectly fine (36C), there goes the idea of it overheating . On anther lucky shot, I tried to go into the safe mode. But the exact same thing happens.

I would have thought it was just a windows error but then it didnt post, so now I think it is a hardware error. And no, we cant test the hardware in another machine. Im afraid his pc is toast, but I promised I would ask you guys first before declaring it dead. So what is your verdict?

Oh and thanks for reading through all that (I hope you understood). :)

Yeah, at first I was thinking that it was a virus that got activated because the CA anti-virus deleted the main program. But with the same thing happening in safe mode, there goes that idea... Before completely declaring it dead, I would try reinstalling Windows and seeing if that fixes it. Then you can try installing the A-V again, and if the same thing happens, sue Computer Associates ;). J/K, but hopefully when you reinstall the A-V, then everything will be fine. Hope this helps!

Wow... That is pretty werid thing that happens. If it happen, I rather check the cooling fan system and repair it from using Windows XP Installtion :)

Easy, just write a new boot record. Boot using a boot diskette, and type

Code:
fdisk /mbr

Or if you have the install CD, boot using it and fixmbr.

This should remove the boot virus.

Im not sure what error, it flashed by to fast.

It started out as a software error but then I beleive it is now a hardware problem.
