Z4CK -Linux on the desktop?

Hi,

Just to say I'm new to this forum, I've finally got the time after writing a cyber thriller called Z4CK over the last year. The book was written and illustrated using completely open source software, and I now feel that Linux has reached a level where it can be used by most PC users.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to posting here again. Half of Z4CK can be downloaded free, tell me what you think! Does anyone else think the desktop has reached a level where any windows user could be taought it from scratch and use it efficiently?

Cheers,

Kev

Welcome to this forum!
The book you wrote sounds interesting, but the layout has many flaws. Either that open source program is not a very bright one or you don't master it.

Have you read it already? Yes, I understand what you are saying, however there is no perfect way to write a book grammatically, take Irvin Welsh books for example!

Cheers,

Kev

I read only a few paragraphs yet.
I was not referring to grammar (don't master it myself, since english is my third language), just the way a page looks it's not so good.

Fair enough. Your business is desktop publishing, you know what you are talking about. I created the PDF myself, and I my business is Internet Security, publishing is not my field of experties. I also can't speak more than English...but I should learn. However, luckily enough Z4CK will be published at the end of September in paperback, and it looks a lot better, using standard DTP templates. The publishers have made it look good. Thanks for the feedb4ck, it is appreciated.

If you're interested in a foreign language translation of the book, I'll show it to a publisher round here, maybe he'll accept to publish it. And wouldn't be so bad some extra money for you... :-)

Z4CK- That would be good

That would be amazing. I have no idea how I would have gone about that. Most of the people who have bought the full PDF version use English as their second language. Countries include, Spain, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Egypt and many more. Obviously there has also been people from the UK and USA too. But I never thought it would be possible to translate it. Thanks for your interest.

Cheers,

Kev

Just wanted to send that pdf to an editor, but I can't access it... Could it be a dyndns error?

I think if you raised a kid on linux, he'd prolly be REALLY good at it, but it's such a windows controlled world.

I wouldnt say Linux is all that hard to learn ... no so much more than DOS or Unix back-in-the-day and even then, in such a Windows world, it wouldnt be too hard except for one flaw in humanity: laziness. People are too lazy to bother learning something that may or may not be better. As for the people who are somewhat-interested in learning or even switching I'd say the biggest letdown of Linux is the lack of software (yet). On campus we live in *nix-land but I never use it much at home simply because the programs I use in Windows simply (a) do not exist or (b) do not exist to the same degree of efficiency of their windows counterparts. Some categories I personally would like to see improvement in the community are video encoding (linux is superb for the playback but comparatively, trash for the content creation, encoding, manipulation, transcoding, authoring etc) as well as image-mastering related programs :)

Z4CK - Reply to LORAND

Lorand,

Could you try downloading the first half of the book again? I have a problem with my ISP, so I have moved the first half of the book to another server. You should be able to download it now. If you need the full version to show to an editor I can send you it by e-mail at your request.

Cheers again,

Kev

The link works at last.
I think the first part is enough for the editor to make up his mind. I'll keep you informed on his decision.

Sorry, not yet. The editors are very busy right now. I'll let you know when I'll have some info.
