Well im looking at a 1tb HDD for my next build for college, but it is an OEM version. What will I need to buy to hook it up?

the SATA or PATA cable if you don't have one already.

some oem drives have a short warranty period. check out whose supplying your oem drive

I would bypass Hitachi if you could. Stick with a Seagate/Samsung or even a W/D. But all you will need is a Sata cable with a OEM drive. Make sure your P/S has a Sata power connector unless the drive has both Sata and a molex power connector. If neither you will need a Molex to Sata power adaptor connector.

(little bit off topic but) Why don't they make SATA connection more sturdy? they always seem so flimsy and loose to me, I usually cable tie the power lead and drive cable together around the plugs to give a bit of stability ;)

As i was putting my HD3870 in i actually broke a connector (the cord chipped the flimsy plastic around the SATA power connector...)
I <3 hot glue guns :)

I've never had that problem but new cables have a locking clip to hold the cable on securely.

yeah arent hitatchi owned (or used to be) by IBM? Old IBM deskstars (a.k.a deathstars) were terrible drives

the ibm deskstars were the bad ones which ultimately lead to hitachi buying their hdd unit. but i haven't heard about the hitachi deathstars going bad.

about the sata cable falling out.... unless you move your computer from place to place or stick your hand in the case the sata cables shouldn't fall out. if you're concerned then you can buy a sata cable with a clip as mentioned or the sata cable that comes bundled with the sata to 4 pin molex power connector (great if you run out of sata power connectors).

I said they seem loose to me :)
And as for moving the computers from place to place.... not me- but my customers do when they come to collect and I was forever getting phonecalls(still do but not as many!! ) . it was nearly always the sata's cables to blame because people bung the computers in the boot of their car and kill it on the way home . which is why I now INSIST they see it running and are satisfied before taking them away ;)
