I have a CRT monitor right now. I'd rather have an LCD simply because I move my computer around a bit. However, I'm obsessed with deep blacks and I was wondering how exactly LCDs can stack up to CRTs in black values.
I've constantly read that CRTs "have an enormous contrast ratio." However, I've never been able to find even an estimate on what a normal CRT contrast ratio comparative to an LCD contrast ratio.
I'd rather not spend around $300 on a monitor if the black values are going to be less than my CRTs even though the LCD would probably look a lot better in general.
So, 20,000:1 seems like an enormous contrast ratio considering it is 2,000% more than what appears to be the average LCD contrast ratio.
Now, to discuss brands, there seems to be a shortage in the brands that produce LCDs with a 20,000:1 contrast ratio -- I can only seem to find Acer, AOC, Samsung and ViewSonic. I dislike Acer as a company and will not purchase from them. Samsung is a very good brand, in my opinion, but Samsung seems to overcharge for their quality and I'd prefer to buy from a US based company if at all possible. A couple of years ago, I heard good things about ViewSonic, but, recently, I have been hearing mixed emotions about ViewSonic. Finally, I do not really know anything about AOC. Judging by the price of their monitors, AOC either offers very competitive prices or low quality products.
Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you.
