20,000:1 contrast

I have a CRT monitor right now. I'd rather have an LCD simply because I move my computer around a bit. However, I'm obsessed with deep blacks and I was wondering how exactly LCDs can stack up to CRTs in black values.

I've constantly read that CRTs "have an enormous contrast ratio." However, I've never been able to find even an estimate on what a normal CRT contrast ratio comparative to an LCD contrast ratio.

I'd rather not spend around $300 on a monitor if the black values are going to be less than my CRTs even though the LCD would probably look a lot better in general.

So, 20,000:1 seems like an enormous contrast ratio considering it is 2,000% more than what appears to be the average LCD contrast ratio.

Now, to discuss brands, there seems to be a shortage in the brands that produce LCDs with a 20,000:1 contrast ratio -- I can only seem to find Acer, AOC, Samsung and ViewSonic. I dislike Acer as a company and will not purchase from them. Samsung is a very good brand, in my opinion, but Samsung seems to overcharge for their quality and I'd prefer to buy from a US based company if at all possible. A couple of years ago, I heard good things about ViewSonic, but, recently, I have been hearing mixed emotions about ViewSonic. Finally, I do not really know anything about AOC. Judging by the price of their monitors, AOC either offers very competitive prices or low quality products.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you.

The 20000:1 your talking about is in DC (Dynamic contrast). It just turns down the back lamp to make it seem darker. But if you have a bright image on a dark background it can make it look kinda over exposed.

I like Acer/Samsung and LG brands

I'm a fan of Viewsonic myself, I bought a cheapy Viewsonic $599 32" LCD and I've been extremely pleased with the picture this thing has. Even looking at Costco, and looking at the line of TV's you could see that the viewsonic was a nicer, brighter, had nicer colors, and the blacks are great for the specs. I'd 100% recommend them to anyone.

I KNEW it! I was bored at work and watching the display tv that advertised with dynamic contrast, and I THOUGHT I saw the lamp getting dimmer during the darker scenes.

Different LCD manufacturers measure contrast rates differently, 20,000:1 is probably the peak contrast ratio anyways.

I've got two LCDs (My laptop LCD, and a 20 inch LG) and both of them are excellent, the 20 inch panel is better due to size, and it's better quality (Cheap laptop :P) and on both I have no problems with colour fidelity, the 20 inch is amazing for gaming.

LG is a solid brand, Acer is OK provided you dont get the cheapest model, Samsung is a bit better then LG but they also cost considerably more.
