Need advice with a new build

My friend asked me to help him build a multimedia pc (for working with videos, and audio editing etc)... He is looking for something top of the line. I'm not new to pc building, but I was looking for some pointers on what I should consider within the build... His budget is $2000 - $3000 ... so price is not a problem :)

Anyone... atm I'm trying to decide how the Phenome quad compares with the Core2 quad Q8200... or which Quad core is best for this build ... please I really need some response

well currently the intel quads are better than the phemons.

well since its for multimedia he wont need the best graphics card but he will need a good cpu and at least 4 gigs of ram. in addition since he has a large budget it might be good to invest a one ssd. they are very fast so he will definitly see an improvement when he is writing or reading from it.

also since the budget is that big i would go with an i7 setup.

Either go i7 or wait till January and get a Phenom II... both should give plenty of power. Buy the mobo from a brand like Gigabyte or ASUS. Get a graphics card with 1GB of memory or so and make sure you get plenty of RAM... for multimedia stuff get 8GB of RAM (he want's top of the line, so give it to him.) :) Also I've heard great things about Antec cases (especially the Antec Nine Hundred and Twelve Hundred), check them out while you're at it.

EDIT: I almost forgot! Make sure you get PLENTY of hard drive space... get one or two of these and he should be all set for a good long time. Remember that uncompressed video and audio takes up a lot of space.

So you don't think Solid state drives would be a good choice for a media pc? Bc I here they are amazingly faster than regular drives... I was going aim for .5 to 1 terrabiits of space for this build (I recorded about 3 min of uncompressed video and it took 3gigs of space O_O)

8 gigs of Ram... wow, but it makes sense.

What of video cards? I would have loved to go with the 4870 x2 but ATI drivers can sometimes be a mess, so I would oft for the GTX 280 instead... is this a mistake?

Never used an SSD myself, but at this point I probably wouldn't buy one myself... maybe someone who's had experience with them can enlighten us.

There's quite a lot of folks around here with 4GBs of RAM, and hey! You can get 2GBs for 20 bucks these days so why not get 8? Especially with a budget like that.

I like my ATI graphics, but then mine is onboard...

do you want someone to do a build for you off of newegg? and if so does he need a new monitor and all that stuff?

oh and i was just wondering when you overclocked with your ep35-ds3l what did you change in the bios because whenever i overclock it seems to freeze up a bit.

well the 2 gigs is for ddr2. with i7 build he is going to need ddr3 which is much more expensive.... but yeah you can wait till the new amd processors come out might be cheaper.

SSD are very expensive in the higher capacity area.

thats the highest amount of space that newegg has and they cost from 600 to 800 dollars. so maybe at this point it would be better to get the 10000 rpm sata HDD.

also 6 gigs of ddr3 ram for an i7 build should be fine. if not go for 12

the antec 900 would be good since the computer is going to be for multimedia and i am sure he is going to want to move the computer from his office and connect it to his tv. and it would be hard to lug that full tower around.

I totally forgot about the DDR3... the AM2+ P2's will support DDR2 though, right? :P

Yup, SSD's are just crazy expensive.

the only thing that i am not happy is a review that i recently read. but who knows the review might be wrong but their bench marks where saying that the new processor beat the core 2 quads but lost to the i7s. which is sad cuz i was hoping to maybe get a deneb. much cheaper.

That's exactly what I was expecting... they should be a good deal cheaper than an i7 so you can't expect it to be better. Currently top of the line means Intel... unfortunately. :(

yup and i am going to be building my comp to last a while so in the end i might just go with i7 and hope that with the denebs coming out intel will drop the i7 prices a bit so the 920 isnt 300 but like 250. but i bet that is wishful thinking

Well, considering that AMD is only going to keep getting better to top Intel, AMD may be better in the long run.

What do you mean... btw let me post my initial build so you guys can critique it if you don't mind

I'll wait for the newyears to pass, then see the reviews on the new AMD quad CPU

I have decided to stick with air cooling (unless informored otherwise)

Ill go with the 1000rpm raptor drives (500g minimum, 1terrabite maximum)

8 gigs or RAM

Now I'm not sure on how much wattage this system will pull, so to be safe Ill hitch a 1000 watt PSU on it... I'm eyeing this one by corsair http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139007

Not sure which Mobo to get just yet though

I will ignore the 4870 X2 and go for the GTX 280 (again unles instructed otherwise)

I wanted to get a top-end case (CM cosmos S), but weight might be an issue

I was going keep the sound integrated... but was not sure if a sound card would be ideal for a media pc... wow, I might have answered my own question :P but then again what do you guys think?

He has the extremities as far as I know (keyboard, mouse, LCD monitor) but I might but a monitor, just a 22 in widescreen...

So what do you guys think, where can I maximize the money I have on this build (no matter how large the budget is :P)
