New At&T "Basic" Internet...only 224kbps?

i just signed up for the "basic" package for at&t internet service. it advertised speeds at "Downstream Speed: Up to 768 Kbps
Upstream Speed: Up to 384 Kbps"

after signing on for the first time, i saw (through the modem's page) that i was connected at 224kbps downstream and 128kbps upstream. will the speeds stay this way or will it get increased to the speed i payed for?

it says on the modem to leave it on constantly for 10 straight days to "maximize speed". will i get what i payed for after these 10 days?

im using wired, directly from modem to computer. no routers or anything

edit: my speedtest.net results
download: 147kb/s (bits, not bytes)
upload: 107kb/s (bits, not bytes, otherwise i wouldnt complain)

certainly not close to the advertised speed...

EDIT2: PROBLEM SOLVED. my speed gradually increased to the speed i payed for!

I think you will find it says"upto 768Kbps" It depends on your line and distance from the exchange, well it does in UK anyway(and I thought my 6.5Meg download speed was bad:eek::eek:

a couple of years ago, i had dsl from att for a different package with the advertised speed of 1536kbps down and 384k up. at first, it was 384k down but as days went by, it slowly increased to 1536k. so in the end (about 2 weeks later), i got the speed i payed for.

now i ordered from att again, and i still live in the same place. im just hoping that "leave modem on for 10 days to maximize speed" sticker on top of the modem is true.

and im using wired, directly from modem to computer. no router or anything.

That may be the case,
however......
Do you realise how many extra people a year buy new pc's and sign upto internet?
That's a hell of a lot more load on the lines after two years.

I hope the speed does go all the way to what maximum your line can handle.

GOOD LUCK bud:)

i hope the speed goes up too. but if it doesnt, i wont cry myself to sleep because i didnt agree to any commitment. the service is a month to month thing and i can cancel anytime with no termination fees.

it should not go up. DSL is "best atempt" at speeds .. they will give you an aceptable range, if your speeds fall inside that range thats good enough and the isp is done.

there are ways to increase the speed such as :-

  • asking the ISP to increase the gain on the line
  • making sure your router is conected at the master socket into your property
  • look into buying an interstitial plate to help cut interference on line.
  • and a few more things which I could list if you're interested.

this problem is...NO LONGER A PROBLEM!!

a couple of days ago, i updated my modem's firmware. the next day, the speed increased to 384kbps up and down. 5 min ago, i got the speed i payed for, 768kbps down and 384kbps up.

so, what are you paying for that ? i would have had dsl years ago. but i cannot get it where i am at, in this big city. sheeeesh.

anyway
i just got comcast economy internet, 1mg down and about 375 up. for $25.
i was on dialup at 40kbs, for $10. so this is a gigantic upgrade for me.

Lol, my grandma's getting ripped off she pays $30 per month for AT&T DSL and she gets 2.5 mb/s download and 300 kb/s
