Or should i go with soething from the x2 in the Ati series?

Well ATi and nVidia both just released new cards, and they are supposedly both top notch. Second best cards in both of their card libraries I think.

GTX 275: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150363

HD 4890: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150359

(XFX is the best :P)

Edit: Oops forgot you were in the UK there. I'll leave those other links up for people who use USD, and these are for citizens of the UK.

I would actually go with the 216 model of the GTX 260. It's almost $100 cheaper than the 275, depending on what model you get. It also overclocks really well, especially with the extra SP's, I heard it can almost reach a stock 280.

Yeah I would agree. I have mine overclocked at 700/1511/1211 and I could go higher I just havnt bothered yet, stock XFX GTX 280 is 602/1296/1210 I believe. Obviously its still not as good as a 280 but still pretty impressive.

Yes but, the GTX 275 is also $100 more. I'm not talking in terms of better performance, but better value. And £150 is a lot for that, the 260's on NewEgg run as low as $150.

You also DO know that Neva is asking this question and he cannot purchase stuff from newegg. He lives in UK and the pricing there are different.

Lol, I realize that Neva lives in the UK, it's right next to the OP. I'm just saying that I'm surprised it runs so high. Regardless of where you're buying, the GTX 260 is cheaper. I just looked up the GTX 275 on that same site, and when converted into dollars, the GTX 260 is still $100 cheaper. So I would still consider it a better deal, assuming that it is the 216 SP model.

Thanks for those liks, but i dont need the latest and greatest,i just want a decent upgrade that will keep me going for some time, ive seen the power of the 260 GTX and it was very impressive for the price tag.

216 model...il have a look thanks :)

What power supply would i be needing for a GTX 260 and the rest of my system?

i know my current one wont cut it,its a Gigabyte superb 460W,runs my GT fine though overclocked.

Maybe a 650W? A quality 650W should be enough.

And most of the GTX 260's out there should be the 216 model. It's been out for a while now, it's basically a regular GTX 260 that's been upgraded from 192 shader processors to 216. Although I'm pretty sure all the 216 models are specified in the name, so I don't think the one you linked is the newer model.

Here's one

Sorry, but I don't know any of the online UK stores. That would probably be the cheapest one for that website.

My XFX says it needs minimum 550W with minimum 12V current rating of 36A. Recommended is 630W, I have a HX620 which does the job nicely. XFX's website was kinda misleading though cos it said for my card it needed 500W in one section then 630W in another.

Also the 216SP version is 55nm whereas the 192SP is 65nm.

Check the manufacturers website to make sure the part numbers match and it is actually the 216SP version. The website I bought mine off didnt specify whether it was 216 or not so I had to look it up.

Yeah if you buy a PSU do yourself a favor go for the quality will last you longer. Also as stated make sure you get a 216 core GTX 260.

Corsair 650w (52A) with single rail. I prefer single so I don't have to juggle 2/4 rails around to spread power.

Will allow you to also run the GTX 295 if you so wish later or allow you to upgrade your CPU etc.

I prefer to buy better PSU then my system needs to both prevent going over 80% load till I have too and to allow upgrades without spending another 60/70 bucks on a new PSU. The question I usually ask myself is "spend 30 bucks more now or 60+ later"

How about these two guys?

Gainward GTX260 Golden Sample 896MB GDDR3 Dual DVI HDCP HDTV out PhysX and Cuda ready PCI-E Graphics Card

OCZ Stealth XStream 600W PSU - SLI Ready ATX2.2 12cm Fan

Total = £213.92

What is it with all these GTX 260s? they all have 896mb of memory, none from what ive seen have a full 1gb version?

ive seen a few 1gb versions of the GTS 250 though, but would prefer a 260.

Oh nevermind, I didn't read all of the specs. That Gainward model does feature 216 SP's so you can ignore the card I linked before. And as far as the 896MB memory, I think that's just how they are all made. I'm not sure why they didn't just go with 1GB though.

Do you know what the equiv ATI card is to a 260 GTX?

Im not fussy with what company....ati or nvidia.

HD4870 is pretty close, its very debatable as to which is better. I went with the GTX 260 for PhysX and it overclocks very well. It took me ages to make up my mind.

You could also consider two HD4850's...my friend just got another one and at stock clocks he got a better 3DMark Vantage GPU score then me. Plus he tells me it plays Crysis maxed out on stock clocks. I have to overclock mine to do that.

EDIT: Although, if you think you might want to go SLI later down the track get a GTX 260. Cos that would pwn two 4850's. Im thinking of taking that path (going SLI) when I can afford it.
