wireless network connection

I am going nuts trying to do something as simple as getting my laptop wireless connection to the net. I tried a long time ago when I first bought my router and gave up and used a cable instead. Now the connector is broken thanks to to much use I'm trying again.

First I know the laptop finds the network since its first on the list with the signal strength up on max. although it does say limited or no access. I've been in the router and set the mac addresses (physical) I've found - both for ethernet LAN and ethernet wireless. I've set up a network in Windows - I'm using Windows XP. It seems the trouble is in getting a network address. How do I get "the system" to give my laptop a network address?

Have you tried disabling/reenabling the wireless network card on your laptop to find an ip address. Maybe you're not typing in the correct password that's set on the router, your network is password secured correct?

Thanks. No i hadn't tried but I have now and the result is the same. The icon for wireless net spends a while trying to make contact - yellow blob going from computer til router, then the message pops up that the connection is limited or non existant. A click on the message tells that the problem is that the network didn't assign an adresse to the computer. I can access the router and set passwords etc. from my stationary PC, otherwise I have not been asked for a password by my laptop. Yes, the network is secure.

I have the same issue with the wireless connection from the stationary PC only I don't use it so it doesn't matter.

make sure you put all the network cables into the correct slots on the router e.g. from the modem to the router.
usually from the modem to the router usually goes into the front port of your router, then the second port and third, fourth etc... are for other things such as printers, game consoles, - basically everything that has a ethernet cable slot. ;)

HERES A LITTLE EXAMPLE:

Thanks, but I'm sure the connections are right as I can come on the net no problem using cables. Its the wireless connection that's the headache.

Ok, try connecting the modem to the router and ensure the connection the the router is all success and correct.
Then proceed to look for wireless connections on your laptop, click the ssid (wireless network) you wish to connect to and make sure you enter or have entered a valid, correct network key.

If it still does not work, best thing to do is to reset your wireless router and let it disable security for a little time period and then try connecting to it without a network key applied.
if it works when router is unsecured - then you know the router network key was the problem and the cause of your head aches.
- Once you get it working again :D
Apply a new network key so no one can use your connection.

When I look at the list of wireless networks I am already connected though with limited or no connection! Therefore there's no option of entering a key, only of disconnecting. If I disconnect and then reconnect I have to enter the key and I get the icon of the ball flying to and from between the PC and the router - lasts about 40 sec. after which I get the message of limited or no connection again. If the notifications are reliable then the problem seems to be that the router fails to assign a dynamic address to the PC.

I hope your wireless network name is already stored on your computer's preferred networks with some settings and that is why it is not prompting for a security key. You have to remove the existing preferred network and then try connecting to the wireless network.
