Are cheap hheatsinks any good

Are the CPU ones worth £12 or so as good as the ones that are worth £40+ when it comes to overclockability?

Obviously the real expensive ones will keep the processor much cooler, but can you still get to high speeds without breaking the mid 40s-50 degree idle temperatures?

Some of the cheaper ones are decent, but some such as the xigmatek S1283 , OCZ Vendetta II, sunbeam core contact freezer, etc work well and are around $30-40USD, and some such as the S-964 are around the $20-30usd mark and keep them pretty cool for the price.

I think this really depends on your testing methodologies. For example, any cheapo heat sink out there can be made into a semi-legit one by throwing a high rpm fan on it. So if you really want to compare heat sinks' cooling abilities, you'll have to use the same fan on all of them. You should find that when you do that, the more expensive heat sinks clearly wins. I'm pretty sure this is how silentpcreview tests their heat sinks.

Those cheaper ones... maybe better than stock, but not what i would consider to be "good". As far as "cheap" goes, this is prolly the best one over there for the price:

Alright then, i will gete saving and order one, it is only for a dual core processor to be overclocked, but as it is old 65nm conroe it runs hotter than the newer 45nm, but even so should do fine.

Would you recomend saving an extra £5-10 to get one that is that little bit better, even though it would mean percevereing with the higher temps and lower overclocking?

The freezer Pro is probably the best "cheap" CPU cooler around. I had one on my E6300 and I was idle in the mid 30's and full load in the high 40's / low 50's. Probably worth saving a little more to get that. Though the push-pin design is a little annoying and doesn't really give you much confidence when moving the case around. Do you regularly move the case? If so, I'd probably look at something else, something with a backing plate.

No i hardly ever move my system, only if I have a problem with hardware and then i take it to a friends house because he has spares of everything you could ever imagine that has been made in computers within the last 10 years or so.

I do occasionally move t to go to LAN parties, but 99% of the time it is sat under my desk plodding away

Can i not take the back plate of another mobo i have that is also socket 775 and change the push in for screws with a little self mod, or would that that make the heatsink un-put-on-able because it would be screwed?

You might be able to ghetto mod your own backing plate onto it, but I can't guarantee it'd work. Plus, I guess you don't really want to save up and then potentially break it.

If you're not going to be moving it around much it'll be fine with the push pins. You're using the stock Intel cooler at the moment, that uses pins and you've not had any problems with that, right?

Absolutely, however i do have a question here, i recently took my mobo out and stripped it to do the bi-monthly thorough clean and when i was dusting the motherboard i noticed a little warping at the cpup, it was dipped down, so the RAM and back panel slots seemedd on the right elvel, the processor seemed dipped down a bit. Is this normal for a motherboard with stock heatsink on?

I should stress that it isn't affecting performance or ease of acess, more just out of interest than anything else

no no dont go with Akasa....i had one of their cheap blue led coolers when i first got my core 2 duo e6300 and it was not very good.

To be honest,if you want to get decent temps with an overclock you will need to go with something like this

I had a Artic freezer 7 pro before my current cooler and it was okay for the price but i needed better.

I got an akasa exhaust and biggest waste of money ever, the thing couldn't shift a fart, it was terrible (if anyone wants it you are welcome, fits into any PCI slot) so won't be getting one of them.

Would that be able to take me to atleast 3.8-4GHz do you think, the arctic freezer or the one you posted?
