Corrupted XP Installation?

greetings all,
......it's been a while!

.....my brother out of state has a dell desktop with win xp, 1 gb ram,
100 gb+hd, etc etc...i set up the computer (programs, settings, etc) for him a year or so ago. was visiting him last week and found that he (or somehow) the computer is screwed up!...

......when he clicks on a picture, the desktop background gets turned off for a second or two and the icons nearest the "clock" disappear (or most of them anyway)....

.......believe it or not, he has dial up for the time being (yeah yeah, i know!) and has 3,000+ e-mails that have already been downloaded from earthlink as that is his dial up isp at this time.....

....i un-installed windows office 2007 (piece of XXXX!) and installed win 2000. i was going to attempt to use the xp disc to somehow restore what i believe could be corrupt system files but, i absolutely cannot - do not want to lose or erase the already downloaded e-mails as they contain valuable medical information for/to him as he is a disabled vet.....i have also gone back just a bit into "restore" but, the problem still exists...

...any help in this situation would be greatly appreciated!..THANKS!

He probably used the Dell configurator.

It sounds like something is killing processes, does he have any antivirus software installed?

You built him a Dell computer?

...hahaa....omg, i can't believe i typed that!...i am working on a cold at present (no, not the sine stuff).....what i meant to say is that i loaded his programs and set up most of the settings in it as well as upgraded ram, hard drive, etc...my mistake..will correct now....thanks for "saving" me!

..see my last reply...grin.....yes, he has anti vir installed but, don't see how that would be the culprit........

I'm not saying it is, but I would suggest running a full scan and if that finds nothing try posting a highjackthis log in the security section.

....thanks for the reply...my brother is not computer literate so, that would be impossible for he to do.....hjt is also not on his computer at this time....
