Hi, I'm not sure the problem with my laptop but wasn't sure where to post.

I used to have so many problems with my laptop that the repair guy at my Uni said to restore to factory settings. I did, and all was great, except.. My laptop will turn off randomly. I thought this was connected to the other problems but they all got fixed when I restored it.. I don't think it can be a software problem since it had the problem right from when I restored it, plus it just feels like a hardware thing.. somehow.

Now I can understand it overheating and shutting down. It usually does so when I have too many tabs open or whatever, I can hear it whirring away extra-hard and that's kinda my fault. The thing I want to fix is the other times.

Basically when I turn on my laptop or open the lid (when it has been on standby) it whirrs a lot for about 10 seconds and then shuts off. I can tell when its going to happen by the way it whirrs. It used to happen only sometimes but now happens pretty much every time I turn it on or resume, but only if it has been off or on standby for a while. When it turns off I just turn it on again and its fine. It asks me if I wanna do some check since it shut down incorrectly but that never works so I just do start up normally and its fine. So.. I mean its not a massive issue but I just don't feel it is healthy for my little lappytopkins. Is it damaging it every time this happens (i.e. every time I turn it on?)

Could it be the battery? Like, maybe it isn't storing the power and needs a few seconds of prechargingness, which is why there is no problem if its been on recently or after it shuts off the first time.. But then, would that account for the whirring? I thought maybe the fan got fluff in so I opened it and cleaned it. It did have fluff in but I think I cleaned it quite well and the problem remains (although this might stop it being so hot and shutting down from too much tabs?). Or is the whirring not the fan and the harddrive spinning? Does the harddrive spin? Sooo confused...

I doubt it's the battery.

It's a long shot but it might be worth spraying out all dust/gunk from the cooling vents with compressed air.

If that won't work it could be the RAM. If not the RAM then my guess would be the motherboard.

Isn't the cooling vent the same as the fan? Same kinda area.
Hmm. I did actually get some RAM around the time it started playing up. I think. It has been doing this for a while and getting worse. Its hard to remember. I have my old RAM somewhere..

i AGREE W/ THE OTHER POSTERS...NOT A LONG SHOT...More than likely the notebook is jammed w/ dust. I would dissasemble , sometimes the dust is in big clumps in the fan / duct. What make and model...there are a few service manuals on line.

In my first post I say I opened it and there was a clump of dust and I took it out. It still has the problems.. I guess there could be some in these 'ducts' you speak of.. but so far it hasn't helped. And its just so weird the way it shuts down the same time, every single time I turn it on, but then is fine if I turn it on immediately after. Like, could dust be that uniform in the problems its caused? I haven't opened it further or bought any compressed air before. I guess I might have to try it, thanks.

"1- Be sure the temp. is good , by using any program for measure the temperature"
I will try and find a temp scanner thingy.. never heard of them before.
"2- Scan all partitions you have with an anti virus"
I scanned. No viruses I think..

sorry moogle301...it is such a classic case scenario I did not read further.
will the notebook do the same plugged in and on battery ? I think speed fan is the free program you are looking for. If you turn off the notebook how long does it have to sit b4 it does it's routine again when turned on? I would be inclinned to take the whole notebook appart, also the fan should spin freely. I would also try one stick of ram @ time, let it sit for awhile and turn it on. Take the HD out and let it sit and turn on. I am thinking now it probably is the ram...also look around in the bios...boot order that sort of stuff. If your notebook is one of the fortuneate ones that has a removable cmos battery...remove the battery for an hour or so...also try removing the main battery and let sit and power up. Batteries now adays have some smarts and could hamper booting if bad...in other words you have to be a detective...oh yes also download memtest86, download the iso and burn to a cd. this will test ram

Thanks. I installed Speedfan and loaded it up before remembering I have no clue how to use it :S :p but the little number on the bottom right by volume ctrl and internet and battery etc says "48" if this means anything? My laptop has been on for about an hour. Also, today for the first time in months it actually turned on first time. This may be because I turned off the wireless switch yesterday or may be because I used it unplugged on just battery for a while yesterday so it ran down a bitand this did something? Or it may just be some random thing..
