Boot off of it and run all the HD hardware diagnostics. If they don't fail then the problem is file system or OS related. I would try to repair Vista from the command console first, though MS stripped that out of the second release of Vista so only the first pressing of OS DVDs have that on them.
You can also do a repair install, or wipe and reload if trying to patch it up doesn't fix the issue.
