Is there any way to format a 1TB drive and try to prevent such a large loss of space upon format?
It's called marketing. There is no loss of space, the drive simply does not have as much space as advertised. It's the whole 1000 bytes = 1024 bytes deal.

Well in any case the shell shocker on Newegg is a 1TB WD Green for $75, which I consider a steal, so I bought one.
You still get a good bit out of it though![]()
I really wish that when they advertise drive space it should say:
"250GB*"
where * goes to this:
"*232GB actual storage space"
Or they could just make HDD's that use proper space (1024b instead of 1000b)
