8800GT Overheating

Today for some reason the card is running quite a bit cooler. Still not at safe temps, but not so high that it is killing itself as fast as it can.

I used Rivatuner to lock fan speed at 100% and it idles at 55c now. Under a gaming load it climbs to a max of 90. Much better than the 110c I was getting a few days ago. Maybe the paste finally got set in?

I am now wondering if an aftermarket cooler would lower temps even further, so that I could run the card at full speed (it's clocked back a bit as of now) and get safe temps.

I guess my question is this, would an aftermarket VGA cooler be that much better than a stock cooler that is running at 100% fan speed?

If I were you I'd invest in new GPU, maybe small upgrade to 9800GT, which runs colder than 8800GT. Or go for something better, GTS 250 maybe???

A 9800GT is the exact same thing as an 8800GT, it runs no hotter or colder. A GTS 250 would be also a very small upgrade, it's equivilant to a 9800GTX+ or 8800GTS 512MB.
 
Except 9800GT is smaller manufacture process, meaning less heat, and lower power consuption. BTW, i broke 4850 changing the cooler, I wish you luck

P.S. I have the same cooler somewhere around, it was gonna be used for the 4850, i poped it on and all i get was ????? all over the black screen at bootup.
 
have you considered the card is getting old and the termal sensors took a crap.

IF you have a IR temp gun to test the readings your programs telling you then you will know. My temp gun is dead on with everest on all temps.
