GeForce 7900 GS Extreme

I bought this card about 3 years ago, for $180 shipped from Newegg. LINK HERE

So, it rocked for about 2 years, then one day I just lost signal to my monitor.
I couldn't get it to work, so I took it out and used the GeForce 6100 onboard I had at the time. Miserable gaming with onboard, but at least I could play.

Anyway, I ran the onboard for a couple days and decided to try the card again,
and it WORKED. It worked for about a week, then lost signal again. After that, it worked until I got an 8600GTS, so I retired the card at that point.
It was a decent card, and actually worked just as well as the new 8600GTS.

I've used the card now and again in my kids pc (the same pc it was in originally) and it does the same thing, just loses signal.

Does anyone know what it might be? I've removed the heatsink and applied some AS5 a couple different times but it doesn't help.

I wondered about the "oven" method but I don't know if this particular card could be a candidate for that or not. Those caps kind of worry me a bit.

Proven to work. may not fix your issue, but is worth a shot. if this doesn't work, you will need a new card :(

I'll cook it up later tonight and try it out.

I was just concerned that the older card may not apply to this method.
I don't want anything to "pop".

it's xfx right? and assuming you had it registered, you can still get an rma

Really? I did register it, the day I got it.

Maybe I'll try that first....

EDIT: I opened a support ticket, we'll see what they have to say.

That would blow my mind if they RMA it after this long. I just never
thought of it. I know some of the newer cards have double lifetime
warranty on them, but I didn't think my old card could qualify. We'll see.

I still have the original box and everything that came with it!!

Haha! Woot! They gave me an RMA number!

3 year old card. Unreal. XFX FTW!!:good:

I wonder if they'll just recertify it or send a new one.
They don't make them anymore, so I wonder what they
will send to replace it....?

probably either a 9800gt, or something in the $180 price bracket

What warrenty does XFX offer?...because of this thread ive just realised i didnt register my 4890 when i got it,anyway i have registred it now.

Im sure i read somewhere its only 2 years?

What warrenty does XFX offer?

I'm not sure, but they wrote this:
Please email a copy of your original sales invoice to [email protected]. For any card over two years old we have to verify the original purchase date to show that the card was registered within the first thirty days and still qualifies for warranty service.

I know XFX offers a Double Lifetime warranty on their newer stuff, but
I honestly never thought they'd take my card, since it's 3 years old.

Loool, the Spy Noodle! Where ya been bud? :)

I'm as surprised as anyone really. Huge kudos for XFX in my book,
and this whole experience will definitely affect any future graphics card purchases. :good:

Didn't know I was well known! I just haven't really thought to go on in a while, but then I rediscovered the joy of solving computer problems. :)
