Monitor - slightly greenish colour!

Hi there.

I have an annoying problem with a computer monitor. The screen has a slight tinge of green to it. I am sure that the problem is not down to the monitor as I have tried another monitor and still got the same green tinge and if I unplug the VGA cable a warning appears on the screen saying "no cable connection" and this does not have the green tinge!

This is what I have tried to correct the problem:

Installed up to date graphics card drivers. GFX Card: Asus Nvidia 7300GS 256MB PCI-E

Made sure that the appearance settings is not affecting the colour. e.g High contrast profile.

Checked the settings on the monitor itself. e.g Red Blue Green colour, contrast, brightness.

Changed the VGA cable and the adapter (there is a VGA to DVI adapter between the DVI port and VGA cable)

Attempted to remove the VGA to DVI adapter and plug the VGA cable into the VGA input next to the DVI input. This returned a "no cable connection" error.

Removed and reseated the graphics card.

I have searched google and cannot find anything to help, do I need a new graphics card?

Doesn't realy help in troubleshooting and I know it is outdated but the graphics card is fine for browsing the internet and watching films etc. It is not used for hardcore gaming.

Could quite probably be a failing video card. The fact that the vga out doesn't seem to work is strange, and you've checked everything I would think to check, short of trying a screen with a DVI input.

Why have you been using a DVI to VGA adapter when there's a VGA port by the way?

I thought someone might ask that, and to be honest I can't remember why I had that adapter in now, it has been years. I suppose the VGA input didn't work before so I used the DVI adapter?

Is there any way to check and confirm that the video card is at fault?

I have a spare video card that needs extra power from the PSU via another lead, could I try putting in this card without the lead plugged into it just to check the display?

Ideally you'd want to try the 7300gt in another computer, but trying another card in its place would at least rule out something else being the culprit.

I've had a few screens do exactly what you're describing - it's always been the vga side that's gone mad, and swapping the input to the DVI port usually sorted things out. If you're in the market for a new screen, or have another screen with a DVI input, then the card would probably be fine.

The 7300s had fans didn't they? If you're only using it for basic stuff then you can also quieten the computer down a bit with a 4350 or something. £20 from scan, and came with a HDMI port, which was a surprise!

Ok thanks for your help, a new video card would be cheaper than buying a new monitor with DVI input, £20 seems reasonable if I can pinpoint the video card to be at fault.

Would it be safe to test a 7950gt in the machine even though the additional power cable is not connected?

Could you take the card out, and just try and use the integrated graphics on the board to see if its your card or not?

Thanks, I didn't think of doing that.

I will try this tommorow and take along another computer with me to test the 7300gt just in case.

I think your monitor might be going bad. i remember when my friend bought a new dell package, and their monitor had a red tinge on everything from day one. they called up dell and they said that it was faulty and to send it back for a replacement.

Hi again, just an update and hopefully some advice and maybe a point in the right direction of a good cheap video card!

Heres what I did:

removed the graphics card completely, although I got a beep from the computer and after checking the motherboard does not have onboard graphics.

Changed the graphics card to the 2nd PCI-E slot. I got a beep and "check cable connection error".

Tested the monitor on another computer - the display came up perfect so this rules out the monitor to be at fault.

Removed the graphics card and plugged it into another computer then started it up. The green tinge came up on the monitor again so this definitely shows that there is some kind of fault with the graphics card.

Then I plugged the graphics card back into the original computer and plugged the VGA cable into the VGA input (not the DVI slot with an adapter). I started the computer and it worked perfect, the display was fine until Windows loaded up and then I got an error from the monitor "check cable connection."

Is there a fix to this problem to allow me to just plug the VGA cable into the VGA slot or do I need to buy a new graphics card now?

If so, my budget is £20-£30 delivered and it must be from a UK website and as good as or better than the outdated 7300gt!
