Pentium 4 631 running HOT.

What's up Computer Forum?

So I have this board I got out of a junked computer I bought from a lady because I wanted the monitor - it only cost me $50. The motherboard had 5 swollen capacitors and wouldn't even turn on.

I had some free time yesterday, so I replaced the bad caps. The board works great now, but the processor (Pentium 4 631 - 3.00GHz) is running at around 67°C according to BIOS. Speedfan won't recognize the sensors, nor will PC Wizard. It seems to be running great, but that temp is way too hot for my liking...

I've tried reseating the heatsink several times - it's brand new and so is the fan, and I've applied the Arctic Silver the same way I always do. Even pressing the HS onto the proc with my hands to ensure full contact produces the same temp.

What do you guys think could be wrong with it? Is it alright to leave it running at that temp if it doesn't get any hotter? The fan doesn't seem to kick into overdrive unless I'm running the Windows 7 System Assessment Test.

If you feel the fins on the heatsink are they hot? If not, the sensor is just wrong, which is very likely.

Yeah it could be a bad sensor. on this new motherboard it says one of my AUX temperatures is 128c... which indicates a whack sensor.

Running hot is kind of the nature of the beast with those Pentium 4s but 67 is hotter than they should be normally running unless the ambient is on the warmer side as well.

I pulled it all apart and reseated the heatsink again. No difference. As soon as I turn it on, it's sitting at 54°C and quickly climbing. It stops at around 64°C-67°C

When it's running, it seems to be great! I'm really impressed with the performance, and I think I might keep it around. But I just don't want to burn it up.

I was thinking that, since it had bad caps, maybe the bad PSU (what I suspect swole the caps to begin with) damaged some other part of the board, or possibly the sensor (as mentioned above). The fan does seem to kick into overdrive here and there, when I'm running somewhat intensive tasks... (i.e. GIMP w/ Firefox, uTorrent and MS Word all open) - but it only lasts about 5 seconds or so...

Maybe I just worry way too much. It says the operating temp for this Pentium 4 is 5°C-80°C - if I'm staying around 70°C, then I should be alright...

Also, I wonder why SpeedFan nor PC Wizard won't recognize the sensor? I'd really like to watch those temps in real time.

It's a 65nm cedar mill not a 90nm prescott. Cedar mills run cooler.

I thought most of the super hot running prescott's were 115w?

I had a 631 overclocked to 4.5ghz and it didn't run those temps. But of course, with a zerotherm Zen cooler. At ~4.8ghz it approached those temps, but only because I was running like 1.70 Vcore on it

i'd say try a new motherboard to see if the sensor has had it. Meanwhile try everest and check that everything else is running as it should.

The single cores in the slower speed bins (3.4GHz and slower) are 84W, the 115W parts are 3.6GHz and 3.8GHz.

I know why it will be so hot, because your computer is old and there are much dust there. my computer was hot before and it did not work for a long time, when i clean it. it works good.

Well, he said he reseated the heatsink so I'm guessing that if it was gunked up with dust he'd have cleaned that out.

But yes it's true on really old systems a lot of times they run hot because of needing cleaned.

Welcome to CF btw!
