i7 single cpu at 100%

I have had this problem for the past few months, my machine is still pretty new as well. On occassion for no reason one of the cpus jumps and stays at 100% useage. It is always the same one. I guess this is the core used for most processes. Anyway it means everything starts to jutter and slow up. I thought it was an issue with vlc so got rid of that, then i stopped windows media player doing somekind of automatic checking thing (cant exactly remember what it was) and after that it was fine. But today its comeback to haunt me again. Ive noticed it sometimes happens when watching video, hence my thoughts it is related to one of the video software packages. But note it sometimes just happens when browsing internet. (firefox)

I only use WMP now, i deleted vlc.

In task manager there are no processes shown to be hogging either cpu or memory useage. System idle is at 97-99% which is normal, so unless the task is hidden i have no idea where to look.

Could be a faulty cpu but those are very rare from what ive read.

Spybot and virus scans show the system as totally clean.

Any ideas on things i could check?

My specs are

i7 930 2.8ghz
win 7 64bit
12g RAM
1TB HD
ATI Radeon 5800 series

Thanks guys

just delete the page file completely restart your pc and the problem may go away, it worked for my pc.

Download System Information for Windows (SIW free version)
No installation required.

After it scans your computer, navigate to Hardware>Sensors and post all info from there.

heres the shoot, dont think there is anything amiss here.
When it occurs again i ll take another shoot as that might reveal something.
It hasnt happened since i started this post. Like i said its pretty random and seems to happen when i using firefox or watching a video online.

i will certainly give the page file thing ago. Using the software mentioned in this thread i checked the page file usage and only about 100m of the allocated space was being used. but i will turn it off then back on again as it wont hurt to try and if it does solve this issue then that would rock.

Can you play some video and get another SIW screenshot?
It looks to me like an overheating issue.

It sounds to me like you don't have the right codec for the video and thus the media players are Software rendering the videos and pinging out your CPU. Because they are single threaded applications it is keeping the full load on just one core. This could also happen if the video's online are in that codec too.

What video extensions are you playing when this happens?

I doubt, it's a codec problem since he tried VLC and VLC has all necessary codecs built in already.

do you have the latest driver and whatever else the cpu needs to run like the motherboard flash update etc. This can be dodgy though even though it has never back fired on me, maybe the more knowing will be able to give you advice on this. I dont know what is best maybe you could try updateing the drivers for everything including motherboard.

That's not true. VLC on my laptop can't play AVCHD as it pings out a processor and plays the video jittery, just like the op. However I have the correct codec for it on my desktop with WMP and it plays it no problem.

The fact that it sounds like this occurs when he is playing a video makes me think it's a codec rendering issues instead of overheating or things along those lines.

Dont you just get an error message if you dont have the right codecs so it wont play at all?

Thanks for all the tips. With regards to SIW when watching videos, i\the temps stayed the same, but i will use it again when the problem reaccurs. As i said its pretty random and doesnt happen all the time just occasionally. Its happens alot when watching youtube videos. other formats i have on my harddrive avi, wav havent caused any issues. Its also happened just after start up which when i havent launched anything, so i restart and then its fine. Its always cured by a restart, so i dont know if thats a hint as to what the issue may be.

So to round up, it happens randomly but ive noticed more occurances when using FF and watching youtube, it maxes out one core, its solved by a restart.
It hasnt happend again since ive started this post and ive been doing everything i normally do, but i fully expect at some point upon start up to just find one core on 100% for no plausable reason, causing me to restart.

I noticed the issue seemed to start around the time i installed VLC, i was using it to watch mkv files of dragonball, haha. I was haveing lots of issues of the video being jittery and maxing the core. After i finished the series i deleted vlc as it wasnt running smooth for me. Since then the issue hasnt been occuring as often but pops up every now and then. So it could be related to vlc in some way. All my drivers are upto date as i used driver wizard or something to update everything. that didnt solve the issue

i used driver wizard or something to update everything
Be careful with those kind of tools.
Drivers shouldn't be updated in bunches.
Normally, you leave them alone, unless you're experiencing a problem with some particular driver.
