what do you use your netbook for?

I'm just curious, if you have a netbook what do you use it for. I'm not sure if I want a laptop or a netbook.

I use my netbook while traveling in my RV. It's small enough and light enough that I can leave it in the RV all the time. I have a Droid X smartphone I use to tether to the netbook while camped somewhere so I can access the internet and email or stream Netflix movies.

Before I got the netbook, I would do the same with a laptop but I would always need to pack the laptop in the RV before a trip then unpack it after a trip. The netbook is just more convenient.

I have 4 kids in college and they use their netbooks to carry around in a backpack so they can take notes during class or access the web between classes. The netbook is much more portable than a full-sized laptop.

Yeah, that's the main thing, portability. I use mine to take to computer jobs if I need to recover files or mount a hard drive for whatever reason. I also take it when I go on trips to the mainland, or anywhere really. So small, and easy to take, yet it's a full fledged computer.

Most netbooks I've seen dont have a dvd/cd drive so they are completely useless for me.

Laptop all the way..
When I first got my netbook I was concerned with that too so I bought an external USB DVD drive to use with it. I've had my netbook for 2 years now and haven't used that external DVD drive in the last year or more as I discovered it isn't quite as necessary as I first thought. It seems most installs are done by downloading from the web lately and if I need to install from a CD, it's pretty easy to copy the install files from the CD to a USB thumb drive. Any CDs or DVDs I need to burn I do on my desktop.

Anyway, in my experience, the lack of a DVD drive on the netbook is not really an issue. Each individual needs to decide that for themselves.

I rather my laptop my sis has a notebook and she doesnt have USB DVD drive and for installing I have to Image the instalation to USB first and then Install it.
notebooks are good but even havin a USB DVD Drive takes place!!! and your laptop with a good config can work so much longer for you and you won't need to change it so soon!
I'm not sure but I heard that the notebooks mother board can't support devices that need the power from USB well .

My netbook is primarily used fir a test platform for me to test Linux OS to see which one I like better for stability and performance. Soon about to become a OSX netbook.

I think i may want to get one for when im tired of sitting at this computer and want to just lay down but still want to browse the net. Cause the screen on my psp go is just way to small.

just use for traveling because its light, small and portable. I needed a external for installing programs but not needed when traveling. its email, credit cards and general use. its a throw away.

When I had my Eee I used it when I didn't want to bring my large 15" Latitude around, and it was originally a replacement for my ailing D600.

But I usually used it to surf the web a lot of the time. I could play some older games on it (Kings Quest, Lemmings, etc.) and I also compiled movies with Windows Movie Maker.

what is this dvd/cd you speak of? :P

I never ever use discs. Even my OS installs are off a bootable thumb drive most the time. I never even replaced the dvd drive in my laptop that was dead when i got it, I'd never use it if I did bother to get one.

This was my concern also when considering what to purchase. I've now owned my HP netbook (which I bought new for $269!) for 2 years and used it for everything I've wanted to without ever needing a dvd/cd drive. Come to think of it, I don't use the dvd/cd drive on my desktop PC all that often either.

Like most people have mentioned, a netbook is all about portability. I use mine for school because it is easy to carry around and does not take up much desk space. I am using it right now sitting on the couch and I love it!

Everything

I use my Netbook for everything because it's all I have.
When I listed my actual needs (not advertising type needs/dreams) my list contained internet, photos, music, various docs and that's it.
It made no sense to spend big money on a Notebook when a much cheaper Netbook would do all that.

Many of my friends and relatives are switching to Netbooks as their only computer when they need a new one because they really have no need for a Desktop or a bigger Notebook.
As an example, my cousin had an old Desktop and an old 16" Notebook, his 2 kids were always fighting over who could use the Notebook in their room to 'study' (yeah sure ) and he mainly used the Desktop for internet, photos and to keep records of where his money went etc.
When it came time to replace the old computers he bought 3 Netbooks for less than the price of a Desktop and a 16" Notebook. Now his kids each have their own Netbook and are responsible for it and he has everything he needs on a Netbook he can put in a drawer.
Most of my relatives don't have a great deal of interest in computers, they just want them to work, or as my other cousin said when I tried to explain a computer problem to her:
"My refrigerator is the most important appliance in my house! How much interest do I have in my refrigerator? None!
I want a computer that works, that's all!"

Having said that, my next computer will probably be a 10" Tablet but that will not be before 2 years (warranty period for my Netbook) and hopefully there will be great improvements to Tablets by then, plus the price should have drooped a lot

I just recently bought my netbook acer aspire one off of a friend for $25. I bought it for portability/traveling I dont want to carry around a big laptop when all I need to do is go online. I also use it to test Linux out and see which one I like.

Have a desktop PC to and on this i usually work when i am at home.
The notebook i take when i travel with business and need something to stay connected with work people.
