Ubuntu 11.10

ah... ok. I see what your saying now. It may be a CCC issue. As shown above, I cant get a driver for my HD4270 either. common thread, AMD chips.

and also when i try to download it from their site it opens up the geditor and then that thing just darkens and never has a message or anything so somethings messed up there and also it says that that driver isn't updated since feb 09 so idk how it worked last time other than that this is an open source os so maybe somebady had been doing it.

sorry, thought i should've been clearer but i have an ATI Radeon 9600se, and i'm gunna see if the install disk came with ubuntu drivers and if they'll work on this version, which i doubt.

Sorry you are having radeon problems, I am currently looking into the market of a new laptop and I am making sure I go with Nvidia only because less problems. I am thinking about a system76 laptop but don't know. I read good things about them.

Just a forewarning, anything with two cards ie nvidia and intergrated will probably give you a fit on some distros. Drivers exsist for them they just don't work :P

I've got one of those setups. I've got an integrated nVidia GeForce 6100 and an nVidia GeForce 7300 GT card.

Been running all sorts of distros with no issues ;)

The issue is normally when you have a intel integrated card and the laptop has "Optimus technology". You can run with the open source drivers fine, but the nvidia drivers have given me and others a fit. Just depends.

Argh! Is there anyway to change the Graphic User Interface for Ubuntu 11.10? I hate the new setup. I just tried Ubuntu 11.10. Is there anyway to change the Graphic User Interface for Ubuntu 11.10 back to the old Ubuntu 10.10 interface? Many things have changed.

What were the programmers thinking?

I have used Ubuntu versions 7, 8, 9 and 10. If there is no way to change the graphic User interface in version 11 I may just stay with Ubuntu 10.10.

yeah, on the log-in menu on the bottom of the screen there should be a menu with the interface options, that's the unity stuff everyone gripes about, i'm not a fan but i just use it cuz it's on auto log-in

When you log out you will see your name along with all of the other users for your system. If you click on your name it will prompt you for a password. Before you put in your password, go to the bottom of your screen. There should be an option for user session. There will be a drop down menu that will have things like Gnome, Failsafe Gnome... Find Ubuntu Classic. Once you have that picked, log on and you should be back to what you are used to seeing.

I am using Ubuntu 11.10. That option is not there. I have been researching this on the Internet. I have to use terminal to get the old graphic user interface. I cannot even find the terminal. This is frustrating.

Edit: I am just going to erase this operating system and install Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit.

My wife is having the same problem, you have to install gnome and advance setting's in your package manager.

Here's the solution for me. Erase the entire partition containing Ubuntu 11.10. Burn a copy of Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit or Ubuntu 11.04 and just forget Ubuntu 11.10 exists. Ubuntu 11.10 runs like garbage compared to Ubuntu 10.10 and I am not up on learning an entirely new graphic User interface.

Well the thing that sucks about 10.10 is it is only supported for six more months, so either get use to unity or move to another OS of choice.

11.10 doesn't run any worse then 10.04 in my opinion. It runs fast and smooth on my Vaio and the only difference I see between 11.10 and the ones before is a new U/I and the software gets better with compatibility. I remember using Rythembox which would not get all the album art, had issues downloading music from Ubuntu One and was not compatible with a huge portion of mobile devices.
