Yes you will need to install updates again.

By the way do not install tons of the updates for no reason unless you really need them otherwise your system will start working like crap by time.

^ not true. mine doesn't.

LoL ok but for how long? :P
Try to have Windows OS on the computer for more than 5 years with ALL the updates you install and that after 5 years system still works great with all the updates you install regulary.I am pretty sure that installing every single possible update will cause the system to NOT work great for even 2 years not to mention 5 years or even 7 years like in my case.
I did not reinstall my OS for 7 years and it still works great and I do not have a single update installed except SP1,SP2 and SP3 lol :D

But I gotta tell you that in 2010. when I "FINALLY" decided to put SP3 also,I was kinda afraid that it will ruin my OS because I read that many people who installed SP3 get BSOD at every OS boot up.But then I was thinking that their OS is just screwed up lol so after 10 days of thinking I FINALLY BARELY installed SP3 and everything was working okay ^^
Of course before I installed SP3,I also read the entire list of fixes in SP3 which took me like an entire day lol.I always read every single fix that is included in the service pack before I install it and establishing on that I decide wether I need that service pack or not.SP3 does contain MANY fixes, but the reason why I installed it is not because of that.It is because I had some problems and bugs which WERE fixed in SP3.But if I did NOT have those problems and bugs occuring to me very often then I would not even install SP3.I mean...why should I update my system with updates fixing certain problems if I do NOT have those problems in the first place lol?
Many people don't believe me when I tell them that I did not reinstall my OS since 2004. and that it still works great lol.
By the way I hate when people say that having ALL the updates is good for the security. That's bullsh!t lol.If you want security then install, configure properly and update a very good antivirus software.

Cheers!

LOL, ok if you want to win the prize for keeping the OS on your computer for the longest period of time, then fine, you win. Most of us don't do that and most of us have no issues with any/all updates. Secondly, arent the service packs essentially all the updates?

LOOOOOOOL that wasn't my point.I am not competing who's OS lasts longer.I was just trying to point out that why should you reinstall entire OS,drivers, all the programs and adjust ALL the options in everything again if you don't have to.The hell with the updates if I will have to reinstall everything again after some time lol.I don't have time for that lol.

As for the SP3,no it does not contain ALL the updates. It contains good amount of fixes which is pretty big,but not even close to ALL lol.Besides you can always remove SP a lot faster and easier for the difference of removing ALL those updates manually one by one if you install all the updates one by one like most people do :P
If installing ALL possible updates will fix ALL the problems (which by the way mostly do not ALL even occur to you in the first place) then what is the point of that especially if you have to reinstall everything here and there. The hell with that lol.I use my system for many things, but reinstallation of everything is definetely not one of them haha =D!
The thing is I use my system for programming mostly and for many other things and I have so much software installed and configured plus many other things and reinstalling all that would take me WEEKS to finish lol.And I do NOT want to spend my time on doing all this again "here and there" like people usually do lol.
Not to mention that there are rumors that Microsoft is putting some bad stuff in the XP updates just to force people to use Windows 7.That is ONE MORE reason why I never use updates and SP3 is definetely the last pack of updates I will use...ever :P

Besides I cloned my entire hard disk drive with Linux Ubuntu on the USB external HDD and if something gets screwed up completely,I will just need to lose 2 hours of waiting and not doing a God damn thing until my clone copies back from my USB external HDD back to my internal computer's HDD. :) So however you look at it,I am 100% secured :P I am too careful sometimes I admit :D

The ONLY reason that could be for me to reinstall everything again is if I ever decide to use newer Windows operating system such as Windows 7.But I am going to use XP for the next many years anyway so I don't have to think about that. But even then I would find a way to UPGRADE my existing XP to Vista and then upgrade Vista to Windows 7 and again without a need to reinstall anything. :P But I doubt I will do that since like I said already I will use XP for the next many years anyway :P
Unless if I EVER decide to use 64-bit OS then yes...I WILL have to reinstall everything, but I am not going to do that for the next 10 years minimum since ALL the software I have is specifically designed for 32-bit systems only and it is not working on the 64-bit systems at all.

What I am trying to say is: Why would anyone lose his/her time on reinstalling everything if not neccessary? :)

-If you want security, use a good antivirus software...
-If you want your system to work properly for a very long period of time,do not install bunch of unneccessary updates which you don't need...
-always have entire HDD cloned on a separate external HDD so that you do not have to ever reinstall anything again...

Cheers!

Thanks for the essay and lesson. My system works just fine with all the updates. Then again, i have a system from the 21st century ;)

Hehehehe :D
LoL I wonder from what century my computer is xD

What an irony actually...people with newest computers having so many problems and reinstalling OS so often while me with so old system never reinstalls anything. It's kinda funny you gotta admit hehe :D

Most service packs do include all the fixes and critical updates up to the point the SP was released. Been doing this for 16 years, I build 4 to 6 every month, sometimes more sometimes less, plus my own and family members and never had the problems your describing. Sure I have had a few prolem with updates over the years. But most were odd ball ones that had a conflict with certain chipsets or if it was a OEM computer and had a conflct with some bloatware program that was installed on it. But have not had any of those problems in a few years. I always recommend to do a clean install about every two to two and half years, has nothing to do with updates. Plus with SPs, I always download and save them on DVD so you dont have to keep redownloading them, plus after you install them you have nowhere near as much updates to download. Have them all since windows 2000. Still have 98 and 98SE. 98SE was a good OS in its time, but pretty much way outdated and crap now. Windows 2000 was and is the best OS microshaft has made. XP was pretty much the disneyland version of 2000. But it did get better over time. Vista is to XP as ME was to 98SE. At this point to install Vista is pretty much lame unless someone just gives you a copy and you cant afford 7. But as far as updates your way way over blowing the problem with them.Plus I still have a couple with 98SE on them with all the updates and they still run fine. Havent reinstalled either one since like maybe 2000/20001, so thats like 10/11 years.
