random shutdowns

okay, so just as it says in the title, my desktop is randomly and for no apparent reason, just shutting down. No BSOD from it, just a shutdown and reboot.

I though it might be temps, so I let it sit a while the first time, then on reboot, set the GPU and CPU fans to 100% but the temps at the current shutdown were only 51* and 30* from the GPU and CPU.

Is there something else that could be wrong? Could this be maleware? Could this be RAM related? If so, how can I keep it running enough to test for these?

Most likely hardware related. Could be hdd. Can you check the event viewer to see if it says anything about errors?

Should I unhook everything not mission critical? like the extra HDD, and the second RAM?

Mainly asking if it would help it to boot, as it shuts down pretty quick.

we have tried that before. When originally trying to test the drive.

john and I could never figure out how to test one that the test would not see.

Hmm. This idea might take a while, and may not work... but you could partition your hard drive, install Vista or whatever to that partition, and see if it boots then. Your OS might have been corrupted.

A little extreme, but hey, may work. How about trying any other hard drive diagnostic tools? I've used the WD tool on non-WD drives and it worked fine.

well I doubt it is corrupt this soon, and the drive with issues is the secondary drive. I have turned it into a storage drive since my RMA was not approved.

shows how it is set up. I have only formatted the non formatted space there in NTFS and installed virtualbox to it and dedicated 20GB to reactOS.

Usually it will test other drives but won't fix any errors, it will say to use drive manufacturers utility. And with Toshiba drives you have to use the fujitsu utility. I've used it in the past and it worked but I just worked on a dell laptop last week that had a toshiba drive in it and it had the same issue, couldn't find it. Even with it in ide mode. So I don't know whats going on with that utility.

I was testing it in the M90. so a dell. Maybe I can try it on the desktop, but I am not sure it will stay booted long enough. though it may be fine outside windows. not sure.

Anyway, downloading DOS and the app now.

Yeah, I realize this. Thought it'd be good so he can isolate the problem.

its just a quick reboot? or it shuts down completely and you have to power it back on? to me the reboot would be a ram failure, the power down completely to me sounds like psu...

Recently I had random reboots, no BSOD, turned out to be unstable OC.
My temps were fine but unstable CPU voltage was causing it.
Worked fine with no OC but I damaged the board later trying to get a stabilized OC.

@john. I am in windows, and can get to event viewer, but I have no idea what to do with it. Its like japanese to me.

no errors today. Several related to system restore points from the 7th, but I know why they are there, and what caused them.

It has to be hardware related. If it was overheating and shut down, it wouldn't turn right back on right away. There is a slight chance it could be malware, but most of the time this is an HDD issue.
