Take a picture of the top of it. Remember to feel around the stickers for possible screws underneath. The top covers are only held on by about 6 or 7 screws.

Here is a picture of the top of the drive. I have removed four of the screws. I don't see any more on the top.

There may be glue holding it together. Just take a flat head screwdriver and pry it open.

I haven't been able to find an opening to pry the drive apart. Here is a picture of the other side. I have removed some of the screws. The one that is left there doesn't come out. It simply turns.

Pry the top cover off I mean. You need to just stick a screwdriver in and pry.

Never took one apart. But I think I know what your talking about. Isnt the top kinda like sealed on, not screwed. Sorta like this one.
I think you need to peel the silver sticker off.

It is exactly that---a Maxtor. Mine dates from 2003 and has a capacity of 20 GB. I have information on it that I want to remove. The top does have screws underneath the label.Never took one apart. I think these things were made impossible to open. I have already removed the four screws under the silver stickers on the top. Didn't you get my picture of the top with the screws removed? I inadvertently deleted this. As StrangleHold says, the drive is sealed.
I've taken those drives apart. It's just been a while. Like I said, I'm pretty sure you also need to peel the sticker away.

Wow...your data must be from Pentagon when you are destroying the data like this instead of just erasing the drive with Kill Disk using some crazy method such as Gutman 32 passes method and then sell the drives and earn nice money.

If you cant get it apart but want to destroy the data that badly, drill through it in a few spots then hammer. If the drill does not shatter the platter, the holes will weaken it enough for the hammer to certainly shatter it with a decent blow or two.
Alternatively that remaining screw is possibly partially stripped, so spinning on the stripped section but still holding it in as there is thread below. If you can get a flat head screwdriver under it, gently lever it up whilst turning counter clockwise with your Philips screwdriver. If there is no room to lever it out you would have to drill it out

I found a small square sticker on the side which looks like it leads into the disc itself. I took it off and got in there with my flat head screwdriver and bent the disc a little. Your method is more drastic than I would choose. I am going to abandon this project entirely now.
