if all you want to do is browse the web, 2gb ram would be plenty, and a 50gb (that's not a typo) HDD would be plenty, and much less than half the price... windows 7 runs great on even 1gb ram and uses less than 20gb of the HDD... not sure about linux, but I would think it would be better than that.
and I would seriously consider older used parts if that's really all you want to do on it. A core 2 duo is still plenty of power, and can be found for less than $20 on amazon...
and what the heck happened??? I haven't looked at ram prices in a long time, but I hadn't heard about the price hikes... but there is still some cheap used ram on amazon, I have bought quite a bit of used ram on amazon and never had any problems...
