How cheap can you make this PC?

if all you want to do is browse the web, 2gb ram would be plenty, and a 50gb (that's not a typo) HDD would be plenty, and much less than half the price... windows 7 runs great on even 1gb ram and uses less than 20gb of the HDD... not sure about linux, but I would think it would be better than that.

and I would seriously consider older used parts if that's really all you want to do on it. A core 2 duo is still plenty of power, and can be found for less than $20 on amazon...

and what the heck happened??? I haven't looked at ram prices in a long time, but I hadn't heard about the price hikes... but there is still some cheap used ram on amazon, I have bought quite a bit of used ram on amazon and never had any problems...

Building a lga775 system might not be a bad idea, the parts are dirt cheap and a core2duo e8400 performs similarly to the 1st gen i3s which is not bad, and definitely plenty for what you do. About the hdd, I think going for 50gb is a bit too extreme, even when I was a little kid I could fill up a 160gb hdd in a month just by installing apps and downloading music. I wouldn't go below 320gb. Plus 50gb hdds are usually old and hence slow.

That depends on if you can get a good CPU, board and DDR2 RAM (which is expensive!) for cheap. A lot of the LGA 775 stuff I see on eBay is overpriced to say the least.

If you want to buy something new, then get the cheapest barebones bundle from Novatech and buy a hard drive and a DVD drive to go with it.

I currently have an external hard drive with some files on its, could i use that for a linux operating system rather than buying a new one? It is a 2 terabyte Samsung D3 station (an internal hard drive in an external case with a use cable).

You could take the drive out of its enclosure and then plug it into your PC via SATA, yes. You'll need to remove the files though, because when you install Linux it'll probably format the drive and delete the files.

I don't recommend leaving it in its case and using it via USB if you want to install an OS on it.

Ok, that is what I mean, I might try that using the HDD and my current PC. To remove the OS and the virtual machine could I just delete all of the files without damaging or leaving anything on the dive?

Yeah you could just delete them or right click on the drive in My Computer and click on format.

That's true, I can get by with a 60gb in my laptop... but thats an ssd, I didn't think about speed. I all depends on what he wants, if we are even still considering the build...haha
