http://blogs.computerworld.com/wind...-update-2-shows-microsoft-has-given-windows-8

They have decided to not bring the start menu back in update 2. 8.1 has flopped as like every other OS Microsoft has made.

Starting with win 95

95 - bad
98 - good
ME - bad
XP - good
Vista - bad
7 - good
8 - bad

This would mean that windows 9 should be good. Unfortunately with end of sales for windows 7 coming in October, that will leave a good 6 months or so before the release of Windows 9 due in spring of 2015.

Lame. I thought the metro tiling system blended with the start menu bar would actually be pretty useful..

I was basing windows 98 as a whole. And windows 2000 really wasn't for home use, more like for businesses. So thats why it was left out.

Thought windows 8 was an ok os. Not great but not as bad as made out.
Don't really see why start menu is so needed. Have never really used it.
Metro apps are an unnecessary but just remove those and you have a good os.

2000 was the best OS microshaft ever made. Really everything from it is based on 2000. They wanted backward compatibility and never changed the file system, WinFS. 2000, XP is 2000 2nd edition, Vista is 2000 3rd edition, 7 is 2000 4th edition, 8 is 2000 5th edition, 8.1 is 2000 5 1/2 edition. Drove this one in the ground, will never learn. Seems like the 3rd edition of 98 which was ME would have taught them something. I would have just felt relieved with 7 after Vista, but no!

Actually WinFS is Windows Future Storage, and not the file system for Windows. I don't think WinFS was ever even properly released.

What are you talking about? It was for home use.

You could use it at home but it was definitely marketed as a business OS since it only came in Professional and Server editions. Windows 9.x was always considered the 'home OS' and the NT ones the 'professional' OSes until XP bridged that gap, offering both Home and Pro editions.

Yeah they did and there was nothing wrong with it at all, just like a lot of people ran/run XP Pro and 7 Pro and 8 Pro at home - it was just intended more for business use than home use.

I think the fact they say 'it's the window to the new economy' in this ad kind of suggests it's more of a business-orientated OS, but that is of course not to say that you cannot also use it at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnEMR-O-ezc

Here is the list of OS's and their release date. As you can see 2000 was actually released before ME. So why would they bring 2000 out in February when ME came out in September of the same year? Its because 2000 was mainly for businesses. Not gonna come out with 2 OS's in one year designed for home use.

Windows XP was actually the first NT based OS for home use. We actually used 2000 at Home Depot when I worked there before upgrading to XP.

I don't think anyone is denying that 2000 was aimed at corporate use, and ME was aimed at home use. Microsoft just did such a horrible job on ME people decided to upgrade to 2000 at home since it was a lot better.

Not quite that simple.
