Should I bother turning the computer to sleep?

I have SSD on my laptop, and it is plugged to a 5TB external drive.

Should I just set the sleep to "Never" when it is plugged to AC?

The advantage is that the computer is always ready. But is there any harm?

Turning off your computer allows it to kill all processes that will slow your computer. Also, you'll need to at least restart it in order to install updates.
It's also an energy saver to turn it off when you're not using it. A SSD boots very fast, so it's not a hassle to turn it back on :)

I would turn it off regularly :)

If it's always on, the fans will likely be running all the time as well to keep the CPU cool. Do you at least have the display turn off after so many minutes? Personally I'd turn it off when I was done with it to save on electricity costs and to prevent premature wear on the components.

Thanks for the input. I used to have it to go to sleep after 30 minutes. But I have some process (video editing) that could take a couple of hours to finish. The computer went to sleep leaving the process undone.

I guess I would just turn off the sleeping when I need to process.

Just leave it on never and manually hit sleep or off when you aren't using it.. Easy.

Sometimes I will set it to 5 hours, which I believe is the max, that way if I leave it on accidentally it will eventually go to sleep but usually any long task will finish in that time period.

That's a good idea.
